How do you guys take out your stock steering wheels?

I've been told people just take it out with their hands normally, but in those cases most of them end up in bloody noses. Others tell me they use a cherrypick or something. So HOW do YOU guys do it?

Isn't there a steering wheel puller of some sort?
Edit: to quote the FSM "the steering wheel must be removed using a suitable puller" I assume you could loan one from O'Reilly's or something.

On a wing and a prayer!! lol... I took mine out about 6 months ago and as you said....the bloody nose was right in my hand with the wheel.... DAMN I WAS PISSED! Looked like I murdered someone in my car! lol!

I would suggest pulling the nut off...and spraying it with some PB-blaster or something of the sorts and then maybe using a puller...

Good luck!

just don't undo the nut all the way..that way when it does decide to give up,you don't smack yourself in the face with the wheel!..I removed a steering wheel on a Trans-am one time..I was also doin a seat swap..didn't have the front bolts in on the driver's seat..pull the steering wheel,..it lets go and me and the steering wheel go flyin' into the back seat..hahaha..laughed my friggin head off!..make sure that the front wheels are straight and disconnect the Battery(or horn fuse )..and I know you can do the rest!..good luck(or wear a helmet!)

My method: (it's NOT recomended) After taking out the locking nut I would spray some WD40 and take a rubber hammer and "lightly tap" around until loose. It worked for me but I would recomend a puller. I replaced the locking nut after that.

I just put my bent leg in between the steering wheel and my face, but then again mine came of easy, really easy.. so yah.. I think you can go to kragen or other autoparts stores and you can borow pullers, they might work for the steering wheel...

good luck.

I have never used a puller in 20 years of working on cars.

Just loosen the nut making sure to leave the nut with a half dozen threads still on.

Wiggle the wheel alternating pulling on one side to the other.

Once the wheel is loose, remove the nut completely and finish pulling the wheel off easily.

its pretty simple actually ... just break loose the big nut in the middle and loosen it until you can turn it freely with your fingers. loosen it like this far off | | . and then give the wheel a few palm strikes on the outer part? (the place you actually hold the wheel while you drive haha) it should come off without causing injury .... this is prolly confusing to read but once you go do it you'll see what i mean.

Jesus H. Christ guys... Go buy a damn gear puller kit.

If you are going to be a lifetime gearhead, it will pay for itself.

How do you guys get the flywheel off from the eccentric shaft?

You know how cheap these FC guys can be. Seriously, for 10 dollars you can buy a puller.

impact wrench followed by ballpin hammer, then thread the nut on some and yank.

I agree with using the puller if it will not come off with a twist and a firm yank with the nut on. I always use mine but a caution. The set I purchased at Advance has three sets of bolts that did not fit the holes. I had to go to a fastener distributor to get ones that worked. So, if you are going to buy a set, take off the center cap and make sure they fit before you drive away.

using a puller will do it, sometimes these things get stuck on there pretty hard, same with flywheels!

i puller is a good idea. but i have pulled off 2 steering wheels in the past week and if you keep the center nut threaded on 2 or 3 threads and gently wiggle the wheel back and forth it should come off fairly easy. both mine did. if it doesnt come off then buy a puller. My modo is that if you need it buy it ,, if you dont and can get by with out it . do it.

Advance Auto Parts will loan you a puller. Give them about $20 (the purchase price if you don't bring it back) and they will refund your money when you return the puller. Its by fare the easiest way to pull your wheel.

It's part of their loaner tool program.

I just pulled mine out 2 hours ago. I broke loose the 21mm nut, and made it loosened it a bit so that when the wheel breaks loose it doesn't hit my nose or whatever.

Anyway, after that's all done, I put my hands behind the steering wheel at 10 and 3 o'clock position and did some power volleyball serve type movements, towards my chest. The steering wheel popped off in 10 seconds MAX!

I am dead serious, hit your fists against the right and left spokes on the steering wheel from behind like a volleyball player, comes right off. Almost like doing curls when working out.

this is real simple. loosen the nut and whack the living hell out of it with a hammer. this also works for flywheels you're not reusing. and Dont mind these "its only 10 bucks" people...for five bucks you can find a kid and say "hey, ill give ya five bucks if you can get that steering wheel off". his response will of course be 'sweet!'. Hey, at least its not you in there getting smashed in the face by a steering wheel.
