I've been having a bitch of a time shifting gears the past few days. I did a search and the general consensus is that it is either hydraulics or my pinion bearing. Obviously, I'm hoping that it's the master cylinder that's gone south because I really don't have the time or inclination to yank my tranny. So how can a person test it? I'd hate to change it out just to find that my old one worked fine. Thanks in advance.

 

you could have some one press the clutch in wile you have your hand on the line and see if you can feel the pressure move though the line. dont know it that will work but its an idea? Does the clutch petel have a full range of motion and does it move smoothly?

 

Check amount of free play, then push clutch pedal to floor. Hold it there for about 1 minute. Let it up and check free play again. If the amount of free play changes, it's bad.

 

Have a look at the slave cylinder first. If its pissing fluid everywhere, there's your problem. If not, have someone operate the clutch pedal while you watch the slave cylinder. You should see it pushing the clutch fork in and out. If it doesn't then the master cylinder is the culprit. If it does, the problem's inside the gearbox.

Coincidently, my master cylinder completely failed without warning on the way home tonight, leaving me with no gears at all. I had to get it towed home. Hopefully I'll be swapping a new one in tomorrow.
