It's what happens when somebody tells you they can do something, and have done it before... And this is the end result...

Yeah... I think I'm just going to have to do it myself. I've never ported a rotary, but I've ported a lot of cylinder heads and oil pumps. Same principle I'm sure, stay within your lines, take your time, make sure everything is even as you go along! Watched a few videos that I could find on YouTube, does not seem so hard just as long as you take your time... Thinking about buy the Mazdatrix DVD and watching it too, unless somebody had a free download or stream for it.

I'd find a good template and scribe a bigger port...then follow that.
If you can get an RB or Judge ITO template then you are rockin'.

I have 100% confidence in you that you can do better than that!

Again my apologies if I went off,but honestly that job is half assed and I am glad that you did not install it.

There's holes on the top inside the port. I believe they ported into a coolant passage making them junk.

I think those holes may have already been there. Some type of air/egr passages. I will look on my old stock center iron tomorrow. If so you may be able clean them up into something usable. Like suggested I'd get a template and go from there. They almost look freehanded to me.

That is possible but i dont recall ever seeing it before. Will just need the OP to stick his finger in the above coolant passage and see if he feels the hole. (yeah yeah thats what she said, i know)

Scratch that. Looking at this pic I found from when I was prepping to port I don't see a hole. They may be right that the water passage was hit. Unfortunately I didn't take a pic of my finished port. I'll still double check tomorrow.

I think I had it confused with this hole that connects the secondary and Aux ports.

I'm pretty sure that hole is for the EGR. I have several stock port center irons with those holes.

Yeah those holes you all are talking about are for the EGR which I've bought a block off kit for. I don't have to worry about emissions where I live, but I've already located a new center iron and will be using my Mazdatrix 6-port template and doing this myself.... I don't trust this center iron anymore.

You could probably fix it from the pictures but, I don't know if it would be worth the time. Honestly, I'd get a new iron and do it myself, get a running motor, then go back to that iron and see if I could fix it. No sense in trashing an iron IF it can be fixed.

I guess it's not relevant now but for future reference I checked and no hole on the S5. It doesn't have and EGR valve so I'd say that's why.

Found this on Mazdatrix. 2nd picture mentions breaking into the EGR passages.

So, just wanted to post what I was able to do in about 30 minutes with a dremel and grinding stone... It's my first time attempting my own street port, and I feel it already looks better than what the last guy did to my other iron... Still need to take my sanding wheels to it to smooth it all out, but for my first time I feel I did pretty good! Especially compared to what I had done for me before... What do you all think?

It looks a lot better than the Jed Clampett wood carving that you had before!

It's crazy how much you shave away, how small the port was before...

The ITO template conveniently places the top corner of the port at exactly the location designed to best catch the corner of the side seal. RB template is the saner choice.
