Unhappy How to diagnose bad pilot bearing vs. bad hydrauics?

Hey folks, so my clutch went out today, awesome. I am trying to think this one out as much as possible before wrench on it, since I moved to norcal, I have few resources to fix it with (only a bag of tools and a street parking spot). Any input on this would be greatly appreciated!

It's not disengaging at all: I can pull it out of gear while moving, but not from a stop.
The top part of the travel of the clutch pedal feels quite weak, but not like "air" (i.e. with slave cylinder off).
I can shift gears while engine is stopped... the only way I got it home was by putting it in gear and giving my poor starter & battery a workout

I pulled the starter so I can see the clutch plate a little, and I am going to turn the engine by the e-shaft bolt to where I can see the edge of the disc when it's light again outside, and check if it is actually touching in the flywheel...

With the clutch slave cylinder disconnected, as I push the pedal in and out I can see the piston moving. Of course, I might have a leakage under pressure... Is there some reasonable way I can test that without blowing up the seals / my clutch line?

It feels a _little_ bit like there is some play in the fork... that is I can move it about 1/2" (on the tip of the fork outside the transmission) and I can feel it just moving the release bearing along the transmission shaft...

If the trans has to come out, then oh well, I'll replace everything in there. Just trying to think through if it is hydraulics or something like that beforehand.

Oh yeah, anyone in San Fran or Berkeley have the "nice" pilot bearing removal tool and want to let me borrow it?

Thanks,
Andrew

Clutch hydraulics...
Have a friend push the pedal down and see if the clutch fork moves.
Have them hold the clutch pedal down for a couple minutes and check to see if the clutch fork collapses back?
Check the fluid - is it BLACK?
Is there enough fluid?
