how can you tell if an air flow sensor is bad?

how can you tell if an air flow sensor is bad?

I was told that the reason my car wont start is probly because my air flow sensor is bad, how can you cheak somthing like this? I tried to take it to the mazda dealer but they said I have to bring in the whole car and it wont be easy for me to do that and they will probly charge me a load to do it?
