How can I improve my Gas Mileage Please help

Ok so heres the thing I have a 88 n/a with no mods currently i noticed I was getting bad Gas Mileage so i ran a full tank shifting at the shift light everytime. I ended up getting about 13 mpg. Not so good. My brother who has a 86n/a with no mods gets like 20 or so. So what can I do to improve my gas mileage at all? Any suggestions would be awesome.

Do a complete tune-up and shift at like 3k. How many miles are on your car?

Change spark plugs regularly (every 5k miles)
Change spark plug wires
Change O2 sensor every other year
Change oil every 3k miles - you could change to a lighter weight oil

Buy and install a CDI box - MSD 6A or Crane Cams HI-6

Install a cat-back exhaust system - adds to engine efficiency

WARNING: STUPID QUESTION APPROACHING..

What's a CDI box? I wouldn't mind improving the fuel efficency of the rex i recently revived as it is the 1.3 gets about 15ish mpg, when my 1.8 eclipse gets ~double that

rotary engines get bad gas milage

rotarys are not comparable to piston engines, they get good gas milage for a sports car. it all depends on power distribution. my 2.4L stanza prolly gets more then your eclipse. It all depends on what the car is made for. the rotary is not the most gas milage efficeint car, i dont think that was a requirment in the design. everyone thinks they get great milage but they dont get what people expect. Displacement doesnt matter...

Rx7Supra - To be perfectly honest, this car gets higher MPG that i expected.. (i wasn't sure i could get it functional ), i was just thinking it would be nice (and i know displacement means approx jack, i was just using it for ref).

Don't good filters give better gas mileage? Maybe install a K&N intake.

thats good that its more than you expected, it would be nice to get al least 5 more mpg i agree, if your not racing you could even try adding some additive to give you more gas milage, filters do say more mpg, and more spark, better exhaust, make it more efficient. but hell i'm no expert someone one told me you burn the most fuel after 3grand, but that prolly depeneds on the car... and stop and go (city) less it takes power to get the car moving. i would think if you kept it under 3 k on the highway you would get better results.

didnt mean to affend anyone if i did and feel free to correct me, i live to learn. =)

Re: How can I improve my Gas Mileage Please help

Hey Bro
My 88 GXL gets around 200 miles to the tank. I have done only mild things to it. Oh by the way it has like
163 thousand miles on it. I put new plugs/wires. K&n filter. you can see what i have done below, what i am saying is that you will never be getting good gas mileage. Its just not gonna happen. Lates Matt22

Buy a Geo - Rex's have lousy gas mileage, that's a fact of life, so if you want to drive one - live with it!

You should be atleast getting 20mpg. You can see what i've done to my n/a 90 in my sig, and i usually get around 25mpg driving country roads (lots of stops signs) and mild in town stuff. On the freeway, i woudl'nt be suprised if i got 28+. CJ

Yeah.. the full tune up will probably help..

change oil + filter
fuel filter
air filter
o2 sensor
spark plugs, plug wires
adjust idle speed and TPS

and reset your ECU!

disconect the negitive terminal on the battery, pump the brake pedal a few times and wait for 10 secs I think maybe more try 30 to be safe the connect the battery up again, start the car and let it adjust its self

Other members have already previously posted what you need to do. Basically, get a tune-up. Change spark plugs, filters, etc.

Also, check to make sure you have proper tire pressure. You will be surprised what a difference it makes.

I've never had it happen, but I was told by a Mazda tech that the trailing coil packs, near the firewall on the driver's side, can fail completely and only really affect the mileage. See if the trailing, top, plugs are firing.

I have new plugs, new oil light oil. I do not drive it hard and only drive it on highway.

I do have the 4k hesitation and bumpy idle when warming up. but once warmed up and I come back from a drive it it idles fine. oh ya did I tell you that my brakes my take 900000 lb of force to brake, inspected the master cylinder and looks like it is brand new.

helppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp.

stock,

go to autozone and buy a couple of 4 gauge ground cables, make sure your batter is good while you are at autozone, demand a free charging system checkup. run you some grounds directly from the negative battery of the battery. One to the engine, just find a huge bolt and put it on there, also run another one to the frame. That fixed my hesitation i had under a load. if you have already ran some grounds, then run some more. trust me.. it will eventually dissapear.

hope this helps.

Why are/were you running so rich? Have you gotten it dynoed with the A/F near 13:1?
