how can i decompress my a.c.?

hello all, pulling my motor for rebuild and i'm not sure how to decompress my a.c. so i can remove it. i'm a windows down kinda' guy. i'd rather not break anything as the compressor could be useful for trading fodder or reinstallation later in life. any suggestions would be helpful. ultimately i am trying to avoid towing it to a shop just to decompress the a.c. thanks in advance.

take the car outside.
'accidently' unhook any of the lines (any of the connections on the ac lines are fine.)
leave.
come back in half an hour.
youre good to go.

You should be able to move the compressor out of the way without disconnecting the lines.

If you are removing the system for good, the only proper way to do it is to have the car towed to an A/C shop so they can reclaim the refrigerant.

Agreed. I know for a fact you can rebuild the engine without venting the A/C system.

Call around, see if there are any shops with a mobile machine. You might get some $$ for the stuff, it's R-12 (or at least should be).

Don't just vent it... '7s are hard enough on the environment as is.

Lol, I put a rag over one of the bleeders and used a screwdriver to push the valve stem in and all I got was a little "hiss" for about two seconds and that was it.

Make sure you cover the spot where you are going to use to depressurize the system (if you choose to do so illegally of course) with an old towel or rag. We acidentally put a screwdriver through a window A/C unit (it was on the ground with the screwdriver and someone kicked the screwdriver by accident and we got a huge surprise when we pulled it out of the hard line it sunk into) and it made an oily mess and was hissing off for a good 20 minutes or so. Ooops.

Please don't vent R12 into the atmosphere. A very small amount does a significant amount of damage to our ozone layer for a very very long time. While I'm hardly an environmentalist, this is one area I draw the line.

I am reporting this thread and providing District 9 Regional EPA office notice that you intend to illegally vent refrigerant into our atmosphere. I hope they track you down if you do. The fines and penalties are significant. I don't care what you do to your car but when it comes down to ******* with my planet, that affects us all. There is a reason why CFCs were banned. The R12 you release will stay for 20-30 years in the atmosphere doing its thing to destroy Ozone. I don't know about you, but I'd like to enjoy my outdoors without having to overly worry about skin cancer due to increased UV radiation getting through a thinner ozone layer.

forget the atmostphere and the ozone there is no seintific prof that the ozone is any worse than the day it was discoverd. besides all that you reall should have the system sucked down not because the tree hugers said so but R-12 is very harful to you if injested or say when you crack the lines you get it in your eyes your assed out. its your body but i would have my sucked out then dissasembled.

by the way R-12 is not banned you can still purchase it and run it in your vechicles you just have to obtain a licence allowing you to.

Ok now, everyone is worried about one guy asking advice about draining his AC and saying it's going to bring an end to the world, OH NO!!! Think about this, how many car accidents happen everyday when the thin AC lines crack or break resulting in a total system drain? I mean if you want to be part of the environmentally sound group, than give me your car and I'll give you a bike or a nice pair of walking shoes. If I were in this situation, I do as I always, let it vent out, it's better than spending $70 on all those hazardous waste disposal fees. There's my 2 cents for ya

rofl, if he isn't kidding then he shouldn't be driving a car because he's polluting the atmosphere as well.

i hate people who get up on their mother ******* soap box and preach about how they are better than the rest, all they are is mother ******* hipocrits who turn a blind eye to what they themselves do and point out everything that everyone else does. don't even get me started on religion...

R12 was an idiotic invention, it sounded good at the time but now what do we do with the ****? it will eventually all go into the atmosphere whether you like it or not, the **** leaks regardless of how well a system is sealed, some leaks out when the system is being serviced regardless of how well you try not to vent any. i hate the ****, i only use R134a conversions. if you can get your car to a shop they generally will evac R12 from your car for free.

want to be angry at someone? be angry at who invented the ****.
