How can I check engine codes?

OK, so my Service engine light is on.

What's the easiest method of checking my engine trouble codes?

Is my 90 t2 an OBD 1 or an OBD 2 car?

Anyway I can check it without a code reader?

I think it's probably exhaust related, as my exhaust has started to smell worse..
