How to: Apex'i intake on a S4
Well I know Apex'i doesnt make a "kit" for the S4 FC but does for the S5 due to differences in the AFM. Also, Ive found quite a bit of people out there wanting to use the Apex filter on their S4 with no luck. Its really not that difficult but havent seen a definete method posted so I thought I would.
You just need an HKS afm adapter (70mm) and the universa Apexil 70mm filter adapter and filter from Apex (not listed on their site but does exist) and finally a 2" long 2.75" diameter hose from hose tech. or wherever. Fits perfectly.
The reason I choose to go with the apex air cleaner is cause it had the best filteration of pretty much any other filter when tested in RevSpeed a while back. So, hope this helps for whoever. I'll get some pics tomorrow.

What is the typical filter size? Isn't it 3"? If so, you can run our FC3S Pro/hIGGItrix AFM adapters which are sized for the typical 3" air filter with no hassles. It is even contoured like the HKS unit internally, which most of the other "cheapie" AFM adapters do not.

RETed, the Apex filter is different in that you cant just put an adapter into the filter, you have to use the Apex adapter and then have it mate to whatever, in which case, it wouldnt bolt to the S4 AFM or straight to an S4 AFM with adapter.
The universal filters & adapters from Apex come in 70, 75 and 80mm. I had a 3in adapter initially but choose the 70mm HKS unit and 70mm Apex adapter because it was the best fitting combination.
Edit - Cost for the adapter from HKS is $20 I believe and the hose with clamps is another $5 or $10. The Apex filter with adapter is in the 90-110 range.

Well.. I got screwed from NOPI a few years back before anyone knew Apex'i filters would not fit S4's(Nopi told me they would fit) I ddn't want to pay the restocking fee so I just got a HKS adapter and JB welded it to the Apex'i adapter.

Few questions:
1. Do you need both the Apex'i adapter AND the HKS adapter, or either or?
2. Where exactly did you buy your Apex'i filter? I was searching at http://www.Optionsauto.com, and theyve got one for $70, but I'm not sure if its the right one.
Thnx, I was very interested in this, you've resparked my interest.

i was considering buying this kit from rx7 store,
but it says its for 89-91 and i have an 86. i think i just need the hks adapter for it to work, correct? and the hose in that pic is to connect from the black apex'i adapter to the air pump, correct?
also, for those who have done this, is it a noticeable hp gain?

If you get that kit you will have to find a way to attach the Apex'i adapter to your HKS adapter. I did that by JB welding the both of them together. I don't really recommend it nor do I discourage it.. just to let you know, if I had the choice I wouldn't have done it. The reason I did it was because I ddn't want to pay restocking fees to NOPI. Plus if you do get that kit, you wont be able to use those mounting brackets. You will need to make your own.

If you're interested in one shoot me a PM and we can work something out, but it's not something I had considered mass producing at this point in time

But anyway the Apex'i intake kit for the S5 wont work easily for on an S4, some custom work needs to be done.

The issue here is really not the intake manifold but it's the AFM. On S5's the AFM is tubular while the on the S4 is more or less angular/Squarish?
