In addition to price range...

Purpose
- Is this a street-legal car or a track-only car?
- Is this for drag racing, road race/autocross, or drifting/show? (choose only one of these three combinations)
- Is your ultimate goal to have a lot of modifications ($10,000 to $50,000), or did you just want a few modifications ($2,000 to $10,000)?

Your resources
- Are you a professional mechanic, did you take an auto shop or welding class, etc.?
- Do you have access to a professional auto shop, or do you have a good home auto shop (engine hoist, engine stand, full tool set with torque wrenches, tubing bender and cutter, jack and stands, Mityvac, hydraulic bearing press, etc.)?
- Do you have money to pay for small parts and services to install the free parts?

Just my own two cents on the issue, I think that Americans spend too much on gifts, especially in this bad economy. Given that, here are some excellent low-budget gifts for rotorheads:

Fumoto F-106 Oil Drain Valve (Standard Model)
Fumoto Valve | Qwik Valve™

Rotor-shaped Oil Drain Pan (I have two... one for bleeding the brakes, and one goes in my trunk and holds oil, Windex, and other spare fluid bottles to keep them in place and to stop them from leaking on the carpet).
Blitz USA: Item # 05075 Triangle Drain Pan

Rotor Key Chain, Rotor Oil Filler Cap, Rotor Key Blank, and other enthusiast items. My favorite is the spinning rotor keychain because quite often people ask me to explain how the engine works.

If you start throwing parts at it without understanding how they work or the consequences of installing them the wrong way then the engine WILL blow up. Your first present should be an education on the car.

Factory service manual .pdf or haynes manual is as good a gift as any. Probably the best gift you could give your car is full service. Oil, filter, plugs, leads, fuel filter is a good start. Then check all vacuum hoses, tps, get injectors cleaned etc.

Go fast bits. Rest of the exhaust system coupled with porting your waste gate and installing a boost controller to bring boost back up to stock. After that you are looking at a stand alone ecu or rtek or similar to make use of future mods

First you must attend a horse auction.

Second you must use the search feature.

I'd go super mild for now. If you add too much then you need a new tune obviously and if you don't have a Fuel Cut Defender get one of those.

VTeC sticker. It adds about 10 hp.

Honestly, forget horsepower and go for reliability. Make a new engine harness to replace your old and brittle one. Replace vacume lines as they are probably hard and cracked. Invest on a standalone ecu, wideband and a tune. Send injectors to rc for cleaning. Etc etc etc.

I'd forget about adding power and concentrate on fully exploiting the power you already have.
Suspension, brakes, tires, chassis tuning and driver training will get you further than simple horsepower.

id say go with an standalone, like megasquirt or the likes. leaves the door wide open for more hp.

i would also start with a standalone if your plans are ultimately going for more power. that is the first basic building block for any real future upgrades. second is upgrading the fuel system, which you will already have a way of adjusting the fuel curves for more boost and more power.

Give the car a good tuneup under the hood. Fluids, hoses, belts, etc. Brakes and suspension. Maybe some good rubber. Learn how do drive car at full limits before making it faster, that way you are less likely to get into trouble in the twisties. After mastering the car, make it faster.

come on people, mastering an 80's sports car is like mastering a new base model kia. they aren't exactly powerhouses with the whole 170 horsepower to the wheels or anything. those comments make me chuckle, as i mastered the car AFTER it was modified, because the stock power levels leave much to be desired and quickly leave you feeling "where is the rest of the pedal?".

Maybe he meant, learn how to drive around the twisties quickly without being a hazard to yourself, your car, or others. Driving is a challenge and can take years to master. I just think of how I am still not a master at the twisties on a motorcycle, and I have been riding since I was 3 (I'm now 26). I'm pretty damn good at the wheelies though! Just starting to get the hang of stoppies. Go out there and have fun while being on the edge of what is safe. Don't push the limit to far. Little increments is the key to not getting hurt.

The car you have is a great car in stock form. Driving a hyundai is not the same. New cars feel like they are floating on the road while 80's cars tend to ride like a go-kart. You feel everything. Maybe it's just preference. The rx7 feels like a toy. My moms gen coupe turbo feels like a space ship. Nice for a daily driver. Not my choice for race car.

+1 on learning car dynamics.
I drove mine for 3 years stock the added Tein coil overs an full awr rear end links and poly everywhere else.
Then relearned the car once more, drove it for 7 more years to figure it out.
Then I added more power with rebuilt bridge port and am relearning once again

Have fun

No offense to OP but that's funny.

So this is a good read plus searching.

Rtec 2.0, racing beat complete exhaust, 4x720 fuel injectors. Pick up an inexpensive wideband o2 sensor, and plug it in the Rtec.
Best bang for your buck.

i think he should go for more hp; since a camry produces more hp form the factory than a fixed up TII, its safe to say that high hp are better than "learning the car"...

Have you ever driven the new camry? It rides nice... but you feel disconnected from earth. I honestly think I could drive a stock t2 faster around a corner. Then again, maybe it's just a preference. I hate new vehicles. Even street bikes. EFI models are having worse fuel milage and flat skinny seats that hurt your *** just because it looks cool. Dirt bikes are now mostly 4-strokes that break all the time. It takes too long to start because you have to kick on the compression stroke and have a hot start button. The 4-stroke 4-wheelers seem to be trouble free for the most part. I can rebuild a 2-stroke myself easily. My kdx 2-stroke just blew up after 13 years of hard abuse. Who says they don't last?! It's like how people say rotaries are **** but they don't even know that it has no pistons.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet. One reason RX7's are hot is the high power to weight ratio. Decrease weight and you effectively increase power. Cheap to do. First thing is remove the spare tire. Then go from there using your imagination.

the spare tire is the last thing i would do to lighten a car, unless you drive constantly near tire shops... i keep my donut because i would really hate getting stuck in the middle of the desert without it.

I've eaten meals that weigh more than my spare tire. Keep that **** in there until you hit the track or autocross.

Drive on an emtpy tank (our gas tanks are over 120 lbs when full) take out carpets and seats if you want the car feel lighter.
