Any good engine builder (Mazdatrix, Pineapple Racing, etc.) can get you an engine for a good price. Be aware that quality costs.
As far as turbocharging and NA, there are two ways; turbo the NA engine (which I am doing), or swap in the TII drivetrain. Both are MAJOR projects and require extensive knowledge of the car. It is generally agreed that it is cheaper to buy a TII. Only "special" cars are cost effective to convert (ie. convertables, radically custom NAs, "loved" cars, etc.).

I have an engine from an '87, it has a little less than 84k original miles, I'm asking $850 with tranny, $725 without. Runs awesome, and is an overall great engine from a well-cared-for car. I'm parting out the car because it was rolled by my "friend", and I need to pay off my Sport and possibly buy a first gen.

You will be better off rebuilding it. Probably cost ~1200-1300 in parts to rebuild it. I could help you with it. Besides getting the housings lapped, it would only take 2 or 3 days to clean it and rebuild the engine.

If you get a rebuilt motor and you are planning to turbo it, it is recomender to go with A TII engine, or at least low compression rotors in a rebuilt engine. It reduces detonation, otherwise known as "PING", but what I call "OOOOHHH SSHHHIITTT!!!"

Email hypntyz@hotmail.com. He's pretty close to you, and he gets some pretty good ported motors from a guy in raleigh that has built a couple fast n/a's. They aren't that pricey either.

alright i got an idea (help me out on this mazdaspeed)
i am thinking about buying that motor and rebuilding it with the 350$ rebuild kit and then swapping it with my motor and rebuilding that too. i either sell my current motor after the rebuild or just add a bunch of cool **** like street port and lightweight rotors with 3mm apex. you know, the fun ****!!! that way i always have a driveable car and i get to supe my car up at the same time. oh my engine right now has 190000 miles (as far as i know) and it runs really smooth for an engine with that mileage. it may have been rebuilt or replaced by the previous owner.
whatta ya think?
