the reason it gets so hot is is a v4-6-8 ect. has alternating pumps of exhaust through the headers while a rotary exhaust pumps out 3 pumps into the same pipe=VERY VERY HOT!

One time after a day of city driving in about 30 degree weather (celcius) i started to smell gas, i didnt really think much of it, luckily i was just about to get gas so when i went to open the cap, i felt preassure like when you open a pop bottle, so i slowly twisted it a bit and about 12 seconds of steam came out because my exhaust had heated up the gas in the tank. any longer something would of blew, so yes from that experience alone i think the exhaust can get
pretty damn hot, especially on a hot day.

what happens is gas expands and contracts normally, and your cap probably isnt designed to vent pressure, so it just builds up.. ive had the pressure in the tank on several cars...
for example you fill your take at night its cold, during the day time the gas expands, if your cap doesnt vent pressure, it just stays in there, the the pressure vents whe nu open it a week later.

yea, my whole exhaust gets pretty damn hot, a while ago i had shorts on and was getting something out of the back and my foot slid off the curb and my leg touched the exhaust tip, left a very nice circular burn on my leg, left a cool scar too, lol.

Actually the pressure is vented into the charcoal canister. On newer vehicles when they are not under load, the ecu will purge the vapor into the intake. Its called an Evaporative emissions system or EVAP. Im not sure if its the same with our cars cuz Ive never had to mess with it. But we dont have vented caps, that was in the old days im pretty sure.
