i have a brand new TPS, from mazda, just under 1 years old... it still idles lumpy... my Apexi AVCR reads between 740 to 770 rpms at idle.

And the verdict is...

Well I got my new TPS yesterday. I went to put it on and discovered I had to take the @$&*^$# throttle body off to install it. Well I got that done, drove the car around, got it warm and adjusted the TPS. It now idles perfectly when warm but a little flaky when cold (more about that later.) Rock solid ~750 RPM with nothing on. With AC, lights, etc. it's solid at about 1000 rpm's and you can see evidence of the BAC valve actually doing what it is supposed to do when you turn things on. However, I discovered today when I went to drive it some more to see if it acted up that my cruise control didn't work. This led me to discover several vacuum hoses that had become disconnected behind the TB which I suspect have something to do with the weird cold idle stuff. The engine was hot so I decided to wait for the car to cool down to reattache them. Now it's pouring f'n rain again here I haven't had a chance to go get the vacuum hoses reattached yet. I suspect that will resolve the weird cold idle problems, but even if it doesn't the car idles and runs better than it ever has since I got it.

I live about 45 miles west of Raleigh. Right now it's a soggy miserable f'n place to live. I'm so damn tired of rain.

I don't think it would hurt if you are going to use the voltage method for testing the TPS. You could easily and conviently look at what's going on when it starts that crappy idle nonsense. Worst case you should be able to rule out the TPS that way.

I however would stick to the method the FSM lists for testing and adjustment. Measure the resistance it with a DM cold and see what it reads. Then measure it warm and idling like crap and see if you can adjust it to within spec. If it's way out of whack like mine was, then you know. Good luck.

BTW, I got those vacuum hoses back on and my cruise works and the idle doesn't hunt up and down when cold like it did before. At this point I think I have had success, but it's not 90 degrees outside today with 80% humidity either.
