Horrid engine noises .. almost grinding

This is the first time in a long time ive been stumped on an issue with an RX7 ..

At freeway speeds around 70-75 mph the car sometimes makes a loud noise. It's the same noise an electric fan makes when its bearings go bad.

Well ive been trying to pinpoint it, it only happens at an EXACT spot in the throttle ... pushed about 1/3rd of the way down.

If i push the pedal down a little further or lessen up on the throttle the noise stops.

If I accelerated it makes the noise when i cross that point in the throttle.

It only seems to happen at freeway speeds but I suspect that's because the car is so slow i constantly have to floor if when in the city so i never get to use partial throttle.

Any ideas on this one? Im baffled so far

i'm thinking it's with something electrical, because if it was just something mechanical it would be going wrong all the time like a constant rattle or noise. But if it was like your TPS gone bad then it would be okay until a certain part of your throttle, which would be consistent when you got to that part of the throttle again. Still this is all speculation. Are you sure it's being affected by a certain part of the throttle and not a certain RPM? If it's a certain RPM then I would suspect a mount, because the resonance would cause it to make the horrible sound when you got to that RPM, but if it's definitely a certain point in the throttle I'm thinking electrical.

Yeah thats my other idea. I need to break out the multimeter and watch for opens in the TPS I think.

The trans mount it shot anyway, there is a seperate vibration that is very rpm dependent.

The fact that it always happens at a very spefiic throttle position leads me to think perhaps its a TPS issue, although whats odd is it's just noise, the engine doesnt seem to be affected at all.

Maybe theres the odd possibility that its just a perfect resonance that with the throttle plates open to a specific point its causing some bad resonance... but ... the odds of that are.. yeah.. impossible
