HORRIBLE gas mileage (9mpg)

Im wondering about the air intake sensor on the UIM on drivers side, the little one that Hides under part of the uim, I unpluged it to day and pluged it back in, It made No Diffrence on how the car sounded, But is there another air temp sensor besides that one, like inside the maf, or tubing.. that would make a Big diffrence on how the fuel burns correct. I replaced to cts behind the water pump made no diffrence at all..

also where can i get to the FSM i cant seem to find it. or the fact page on detailed parts and what they do? i lost mine in cyberspace

check in the FAQ stiky its got a link to it it should be in the fuel and exhaust system

but its in a very odd location(the sensor) so when i get a chance doing my Marren PD setup i'll check it and probably just replace it with my NA sensor

Get your handy-dandy FSM...You can check out all of these sensors at the ECU...One quick voltage reading will tell you if it's good or not...Section 4A, I believe, for the S4's...

im scared to do it, lol if i touch the wrong thing i could toast it to hell, besides my volt meter is hella old and my ohm meter wont work cause there is an old battery that got welded in

The meter is "passive" when measuring voltages- it's (almost) murphy-proof...You WON'T fry anything as long as you remember to keep the black (negative) lead on a good ground near the ECU...

The meter is "active" when performing resistance readings, and that's where you'll run into problems if you don't know what you're doing

I had a "basic electrical troubleshooting" thread going about a year ago- do a search...

ever had a carb'ed car? theres a choke on them that was used to richen the mixture so it is more prone to stalling when its cold...

I'm getting an average of 18-20mpg in my TII. Do I spend a lot in gas? You bet! I gotta pay like $2.15 for 87 out here and it's my daily driver to school. School btw is about 40 miles away. Heh, but I'd rather have my RX-7 verses my older car a Saturn. Yuck!

exactly right my friend... and I'm not boosting ALL the freaking time... just too much traffic and freaking stop lights! Not like my friend who says "Hey I got a turbo right? might as well use it as much as possable!" But he drives his car way better than me too. Takes turns at like 60mph and stuff! Insane-o! But yeah there's nothing wrong with 87 octance in a no-mod car. I usually run 89 but gas is killing me so I'm running 87 to save a few pennies for a bit.

i dont know how that specific sensor works, but temp sensors are generally thermistors, meaning they change resistance with temperature.

try pulling the wires off it and check the resistance between the two terminals. see if it changes at a more or less linear rate with the water temperature.

All right guys, for the 254th time (or so), ALL of the sensors that can screw with gas mileage, performance, and general driveability can be read out from the ECU.

All of 'em...Takes about 15 minutes once you have the right page out of the FSM in front of ya....

You don't have to take anything off of the engine, either

i replaced my spark plugs, and ran a few cans of fuel injector cleaner, Brought my mpg back up to like 16 so far, give it a try, I thought my spark plugs were ok but i took them out and they were worn down to nothing, cant believe it was running

Great Gas Mileage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah i just calculated my mileage, i was at 9mpg or close to it for the longest time, im back up too 17.55000 NO ****!!! all i did was make sure the timing was good, changed spark Plugs , and ran two bottles of that fuel injector cleaner, YEah My car smelled like Jet exhuast and everyone looked at me funny, BUT IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I know that I have to change the spark nuts soon, and I already did the carb cleaner trick, which did help performance greatly (especially after sitting without running for ~1.5 months). Question for wayne though: Which page in the FSM? I've been front to back and back to the front again and can't seem to find it. I know how to do the error codes, but how to check each sensor. Also, can a universal reader unit that display's all that info be used on our cars to do that? I only ask because I don't know if the engine computer was designed with diagnostic units in mind, and I have a damn nice one (~$4k) available to me right now for personal use.

Man, I had a good writeup going on using the ECU for all of these checks, I think the mods let it disappear into cyberspace...

You can try a search, something like "troubleshooting from the ECU"...

On an S4 NA, it's in section 4a...

Edit- I found it, but it wouldn't pull up....Pisses me off, a lot of good people added a lot of good knowledge to that thread...

That sucks, wish it was here now. The question though is wether or not I can hook a data reader ment for all EFI cars since the late 70's to the 7 and have it display the different measurements from each sensor as the car is running?

FYI the water thermosensor is $18 at autozone.

Why bother to test instead of replacing a 16+ year old $18 thing?
Its like an O2 sensor, its 16+ year old thing and it $18 its not like it can be harmful.

Or at least this is how I justify my expenses.

Question though
- to replace can i just get to it by moving my alt or does uim have to come off?

Yeah, you can get to it with just the alt out of the way. Be careful when retightening the big nut at the back of the alt- if it's the design with the harness standoff integral to it, it can spin on you while tightening the bolt and damage the thermo sensor/connector...

I am getting like 16 mpg. I haven't used and FC for and everyday driver for years. I forgot just how shitty the mileage is. I will also have to check the ECU. I just got my car smog here in CA so I assume is was right.
