my car broke my heart today when i checked underneath it and glanced at the floor boards....

for some reason i must have never noticed when the car was raised and i was underneath it but i have one hole the size of my thumb and 2 smaller one's....

i really dont think they were there before mabe someone tried lifting it some redneck way and fucked it up at one of the shops, i suspect this to be why....

they are on my passangers side ( your drivers, mine's RHD ), and about a few inches from the side skirt....

needless to say, i want to mend my own heart and cure my poor 7, do you guys have any suggestions as to what i should do?...

it really and truly does suck, i'm willing to do anything right now....

it was a real heart break to see them, could i just take the coating off, grind the area down a little and weld in a replacement patch?...

well, i mean these cars have no collector value
it is as valueable as a 1994 4 door camry...

when it rust thru... just weld a sheet metal on it... or just look for a rust free shell from california... from free to 200 bucks with clean title.....

i have some rust on drivers side as well, when i get the chance im going to get a fllor board peice and weld it in to replace the rust.

 

mine's a decently unique FC though....

you know, RHD and all....

i was hoping that i could say, clean out the area and weld in a new piece, a shop suggested i clean the area and see if i could fit rubber plugs in the holes....

Even if you are not going to immediately repair it, you want to stop it from spreading. So any advice to ignore it is very poor indeed. At the very least, wire brush the area, cut out any rust and then paint with an appropriate coating (ie. POR-15).

If you want to repair it, then the job is not a big deal if the rust is localized. Cut it out, cut a patch and then weld it in place. Grind the welds flat and then coat both sides with POR-15 or other rust paint.

 

just so you know........

don't weld those patches on ***** nilly.......there IS carpet on the other side of the floor......

if you want to properly butt weld patches in your floor you'll need to pull the seats and lift the carpet and insulation away from the area being worked on........these cars can lite themselves on fire easily enough without the aid of a welder and flamable carpet - lol

but thats nothing buddy.......I had to put entire rockers in the 86 beater N/A I just picked up......two thumb size holes? you should be on your knees thanking the rotary gods - hehe

just stell a street sign and cut it up. Those things are galvanized like a bitch, you ever seen them rust. Its a free patch, just weld it on.

 

The "junk it" advice DOES apply to serious rust, however. There are countless RX7 shells with 0 rust in junkyards for people to consider spending god knows how much time/money fixing major rust on their car.

Follow Aaron's advice and patch it up. Do all the prep work and finishing work yourself and just pay someone to weld a patch on it.

 

And then lets say in the future he gets pulled over and the cops wants to look undernieth to see if he has a cat or whatnot...and see's a streetsign just chillen...yeah...that'd be a funny ticket

i should add that the metal around the holes is very strong and doesent look as if there is rust there, almost as if the holes were a freak accident.... which i somehow think they are....

a shop said they could do it and it shouldnt cost all that much, it's not DIRECTLY under the floor boards, it's a few inches in from the side of the car, so it's in a dire little gap....

 

i kinda meant in canada, i dont think there are more then 10-15 in western canada....

First, that's kind of ilegal. I guess everyone does it since I have a "Bridgeport Ave." sign hanging in my driveway, but still...

Secondly, when you weld you will burn the galvanizing right off so the rust resistance will disappear.

3rd, many street signs are aluminium (at least around here)

 

Your lucky. I bought an 87 Tii without looking at all of it and was driving home when the front of the drivers seat fell about 2 inches lower due to about 10sq inches of hole there.
