Do NOT buy an OEM O2 sensor (they are like $50+). Pick up a Bosch universal from O'Reilly's, or the like, and drop it in. Mine was $18. In fact, Mazda probably uses Bosch.

Can anyone verify that these would work? using generic/cheap stuff makes me nervous knowing how finicky these cars can be

Try using a four wire universal O2 sensor from bosch. It will be better than the factory and will make an air/fuel gauge more accurate than the single wire mazda

This stuff is not cheap, it is just that Mazda way overprices their stuff. The only time your car uses the O2 sensor is when you are driving at a constant speed where it goes into a mode where it uses the O2 sensor to maximize fuel economy. Under throttle applications, your car does not use the O2 sensor. In fact, you can drive around without an O2 sensor wiithout any problems (other than low gas mileage).

I was getting 15-17 mpg in my 5-spd vert before I changed the O2 sensor, but now I am up to 19 mpg. Also, my idle smoothed out a little more.

300 miles per fill-up. VERY consistant, but always a mix between driving hard and going speed limit...
