HKS exhaust users...

Anyone who is using HKS exhaust... what's your opinion on it? I want to compare it to Racing Beat. I have a friend that insists HKS flows better than Racing Beat, but no evidence.

It's going on my '88 GTU.

the hks should flow alot better than the RB. i have both(haven't put on my RB on yet though) but the hks is a straight through exhaust.

i know i'm gonna like the RB better though. the HKS is way too loud.

What HKS system are you comparing? The one that looks somewhat stock like the RB or the hiper or another one?

They also have a 50mm NA old-school exhaust, and a 60mm turbo old-school exhaust - dunno if they're made any more.

That 50mm was too restrictive on NA's, IMHO.

First of all the Racing Beat mufflers are STRAIGH THROUGH.

I don't know about FLOW numbers but its probably going to be hard to find the numbers on them.

It is not a RICER can straight through it is at an angle to make full use of the sound muffling. lol

Go read their site if you don't beleive me. It is in all their mufflers STRAIGH THROUGH I swear people don't read anything these days.

I'm also looking at Apex'i mufflers. It'll be pretty loud, but there are some on Ebay for like $50 each.

I've got a Racing beat muffler on my 85 GSL-SE, but I kinda wanted something louder for my 2nd gen. This is the setup I'm thinking:

RB or HKS downpipe, presilencer, Y-splitter.

Apex n1 mufflers.

Sound like a plan?

Honestly I think APEXi is a good name but the N1's are just rice cans with large diamiter pipe attatched IMO
I heard a vid of them on a TII and it was LOUD. On an N/a it should be a lot LOUDER

But those N1s will outperform RB, especially for TIIs. So I don't see the rice in that.

Just remember that the "Apexi" mufflers on ebay for $50 are not Apex'i's really. They just say that so that when you search for "apexi" their auction shows up.

I'll admit, I think my na is going to show my
ricey side, even though I don't have one. Every once and a while I don't mind a loud exhaust if it sounds good.

I'll check to make sure those really are Apexi on Ebay. I don't want 50$-quality mufflers.

Thats what I'm saying. Drop the cat and you lose all hope for a quality exhaust tone, especially with NAs. Well not quality, but that low and clean of one.

APEXi is loud period
The single GT one must be even crazier than the N1's.

BTW greddy and racing beat both sound very nice on N/a's

They most certainly do. If I take off my mufflers it gets loud.

First off, the real-deal Apexi N1 cat-back and the Bonez downpipe/presilencer is one of the BEST sounding NA setups, hands down. It's not quiet, but it's not ridiculously loud either - the Dynomax and the like are way more obnoxious.

The N1 is DEEP sounding - deep bass rumble. Zero weedwhacker sound or buzz, just a rumble at idle and a ROAR when you step on it.

I've also heard the GT series on an NA with the Bonez downpipe/presilencer - that's loud . A buddy of mine got the GT for his turbo project, and slapped it on his '86 GXL to have fun with. Drove it over to the house, and I laid down behind the car to look at the exhaust under the car. You could feel the exhaust tone deep in your chest - it was nuts!

Anyhow, the best deal with the N1 is the silencer. When it's time for a long car trip, just pop in the silencer, and ALL the drone and loudness goes away. Cruise in peace, then pop it out when you get there.

The N1 also out-performs the HKS 50mm bigtime, especially on the '89-91 NA's. We swapped from one to the other on a buddy's car, and it makes a noticeable difference, especially on the top end.

Again, I'm talking about the pre-made bolt on cat back from Apexi - someone homegrown welding muffler cans on, I can't vouch for . At one time or another there was about 5-10 RX-7's with N1's and N1 GT series running around Pensacola, and I've seen those systems with every combo you can think of. They never fail to disappoint.

I currently have the N1 on my TII, and I really don't think it's that loud, a friend of mine has the GT Spec and that is loud, it will drone out my car. The N1 has a good tone to it, I like the way it sounds, it doesn' have a weedwacker sound at all. Just my opnions.
