Hitting a wall at 1500 rpm starting up

While trying to fix my 1987 rx7 se that has not been run in 5 years... I have been unable to get it to actually start.

I have gotten it to fire up to about 2000 rpm, but it seems like something is shutting off at 1500 rpm.

Try cleaning the connection of your throttle position sensor. Mine was badly corroded and caused my car to crap out. similar symptoms, it might be the same problem. It is the little rectangular box under your throttle linkage thing. theres a little plastic cylinder that goes in and out when you rotate your throttle. Unplug it and clean the connectors. Good luck - Mike

Unable to get it to actually start?

You mean it starts, revs to 2000 and immediately dies?

i was thinking that 1500rpm thing sounded like the warm up feature that some rx7's had.

You're thinking of the Accelerated Warmup System (AWS). It revs the car to 3000 and slowly brings it back down until the engine is warmed up.

He needs to give more information for us to better be able to help him.

When I try to start it (it doesnt idle on its own at all) it will build to 500rpm and then take off.... as it passes 1500rpm I can tell it starts losing power before it hits 2000 rpm. I think that I will try cleaning and lubricating the tps. It's so close!

I guess I should also mention that my air flow meter is broken and prevents my ignition system from working when plugged in... so obviousley I unplug it. I have tried jumping the wires on the yellow connector to insure that the fuel pump is running prior to car start and I hear the pump switch on.

Just noticed that...

Can you keep it running by holding down the gas?
