Hitting a hitch with an 86 rebuild

Okay, here's the back ground: recently took on a project to rebuild an 86 roller because my previous 7 was totaled by a front driverside blow out coming out of a corner. I got the roller and have stripped it down and installed the engine (my first time doing it). I *think* I have the harness hooked up right, but I can't get it to crank over. When I put the key into On or Acc I get a buzzing noise from the engine. which I think indicates that something is wrong. I don't have a battery for it yet I was just using a jumper box deal.

My questions: Is there any part of the harness that when not attached will make the engine buzz? where is a proper ground for the engine block (Is it through the starter ground)? Is there anything else I should check?

Some additional background: I do not have an instrament cluster hooked up yet. Would that alone keep the engine from being turned over? I've swapped the ECU's so I'm fairly certain that both the harness and the ecu are in good condition. I'd like to have the engine turn over tomorrow so your input would be really helpful. I do not hear the starter kick on or even hear the solinoid click, so perhaps I've hooked up the harness wrong. I've looked over the FSM to try and find a step by step harness install on the engine--but I didn't see it, I eventually had to run through it and ran along with what I remembered. From what it looks like I have it hooked up. I'm fairly certain that the tranny sensors and starter are hooked up correctly. I'm pretty sure that the the engine harness is attached correctly (minus the sub zero start system. I removed mine). Any ideas?

The ground wire for the engine runs from the negative post of the battery to THE long bolt on the starter where it is bolted down. The negative wire is the one on the battery that is most forward on the battery.

On a NORMAL car, if you put the key to ON (not START, but just ON), the BAC will vibrate because it has a duty cycle and that is normal. Disconnect the BAC's plug and see if the buzzing goes away.

If not, then I've no idea what buzzing your hearing. In ACC the bac does not vibrate buzz.

Make sure your battery terminals are not crossed. NOT a good thing to do.

Okay. I'll look into those. Is there anything else I should look at while i'm down there?

well it's cranking now. Just some helpful information you can't turn over an engine solely on a jumper box. you need a battery.

Another question when I primed up the fuel pump and rails by jumping the yellow plug to do it, i hear what sounds like air escaping. I don't see any fuel spilling and everything looks fine. But should that noise be a cause for concern for me?

It's the sound of fuel passing thru the fuel rails and going back to the fuel tank.
