High speed wipers for the incompetent (me )

This is for wipers that only work on the low speed and you want the high speed to also work........but KNOW your totally incompetent to desolder the old relays.

The answer is to NOT desolder the old relay. Simple as that. Go online to http://www.mouser.com/ and order a relay or two. Part number is shown in the attached jpg.

Then buy some 26 gauge wire. Single stand wire and 26 gauge. You want single stand and small gauge so it'll be plyable. As in not stiff as a board.

Then cut the wire into six pieces of the length YOU think you'll need. Solder one end of each wire to the wiper board where the failed relay is already soldered. Solder from the OTHER side of the board from where the original relay is soldered.

Then solder the other end of each wire to the new relay. Before putting anything back together, plug the wiper switch into the car harness and turn the key ON and see if the wipers now work at both speeds. SHOULD.

If it now works, then you'll find that there is lots of room for you to STUFF that new relay and it's 26gauge wires. STUFF it behind the cruise and wiper switch. String tie it in place or put a dab of RTV to the relay to bond it to the aft side of the cruise/wiper area. It's up to YOU to decide where to STUFF it.

The one in the attached jpgs was done just as a demo. The wires are not cut to any exact size. I dd this to prove it would work and it does when I plug it to the cars harness.

That's all I have to say on wipers. I don't and won't answer questions 'bout other types of wiper problems. This addresses the lack of a high speed wiper with the low now working. It does not address anything else. It's here to help those who have problems destroying circuit boards when desoldering the old relay. Soder wick might help those who desolder or one of those solder sucker tools. Frankly it's not worth the time to desolder the old relay and definetly not woth the time to sand the contacts in the old relay to make it functional again.

MOUSER ELECTRONICS is five star in it's timely delivery of parts. Mouser = GOOD.

Just to clarify, I've desoldered a few wipers very successfully.......but I've also TRASHED two in the recent past. Not happy 'bout that, so I got to thinking ....."why desolder?" and came up with this method which is BULLET PROOF unless your really, really, really dumbed out and solder the posts on the relay *** backwards or???? I'm ISO 2000 certified.

+1 for Mouser, I have bought injector resistors from them.

HAILERS, do you think you could do a MS Paint style diagram for reference? I am one of the lucky few to have an Icemark rebuilt switch (RIP).

Nah. The relay has six posts on it. Two of which are further apart from the other four posts on the relay. So there should be no problem deciding which post on the new relay goes to which soldering point on the PCB.

There is a black cover that has ears on it and comes off. That cover usually covers the area shown in the jpg attached. The OLD relay itself is soldered on the other side of the board and all you can see on this side is where the posts on the relay are soldered to the PCB. So, since two of the relays posts are spread apart further than the other four posts on the relay, you have no problem figuring out which posts on the new relay match which soldering spots on the PCB.

There is no need to cut up the switch on the other side to look at the old relay. We care not what the old relay looks like (it looks just like the one you bought). There is nothing to gain by cutting up the switch to view the old relay.

Just remove the black cover and match the attached jpgs with your switch and youl'll readily see the six spots where the six new 26ga wires need to be soldered.

Buy a small can of soldering paste from radio shack and tin the ends of the new wires prior to soldering them to the board. Helps.

+2 for Mouser. I also bought my injector resistors from them. Now if they would just stop sending me those 10,000 page catalogs...

My high speed wipers still work (for now?), but I've got a couple of extra switches to play with, and the intermittent setting on my current switch works a little too intermittently, so maybe I'll get around to messing with this stuff sometime.
