Hi! I'm new...

Hey. I'm thinking of getting an FC as a beater. I know it's a nice car, but my dream car is still an MKII MR2 (sorry guys!). I might switch over or I might just stay with the FC for ever.. hehe.

I was just wondering, how fast is an N/A FC? How fast can I make it, cheaply? This is only a beater, sorta, for me... so I don't want to dump TOO much into it. Can it beat an 2000 Civic SI?

Any mods I can install then change over? I'll put in an Infinity Basslink and a decent HU, that way I could move it over to my other car if I ever get it.... but I hear I have to tear apart the speaker holders to put in any aftermarket speakers.

Oops, I went off topic. Main question... how fast is it? How fast can I make it w/o dumping too much money? N/A FC.

Oh btw, I'm a roatry n00b. Actually a car n00b in general.....

This might've been better in the 2nd gen forum. Doesn't matter, I'll answer anyway.

To answer your comparison quickly, the 2000 Civic Si puts out 160hp and weighs 2600ish pounds, doing 0-60 in 7.2ish seconds.

The 2nd gens weighed around 2800 from the factory, and put out 146hp from 86-89 and 160hp from 89-91. 0-60 is around 7.6 seconds to 7.4 seconds.

Or to put it another way, they really are pretty close.

As for performance, this is just going to be off the top of my head. Racing Beat header is $180 for the streetable version, and their full cat-back exhaust is $580. How much gain? Honestly, couldn't say... maybe someone with more FC experience could chip in. I'd guesstimate 20-30ish. The stock exhaust manifolds are that bad. There's also the normal assortment of bolt-ons; intake, pulleys, and whatnot.

More involved stuff you probably don't want to get into; porting and whatnot's probably too much effort for something like this, and I doubt swapping over to a carbureted intake manifold would be something you'd want to do anyway.

As for changing over mods... not really sure what you mean there.

If you want a cheap beater to modify, it is probably better to stick with a Honda. The RX-7 is a real sportscar, and performance mods can get pretty expensive. A fully-competitive EP-Class NA RX-7 has a building cost of about $50,000 USD.

If pricing is about the same in Canada as it is in the US, you can get a TurboII RX-7 for about $1,000-1,500 CAN more than an NA in the same shape, which is less than it would cost to get the NA to the same quarter mile time. The NA RX-7 is intended more for the speedway than it is for the drag strip.

The only performance mod I can think of that will transfer over to another car is a universal standalone EMS (Haltech, Wolf, Electromotive, etc., but not Microtech). However, these are so expensive, and technology changes so fast, that I don't think this would be a good modification in your case.

Moving to the 2Gen forum.

Thanks for the move! Hmm... the MR2 has been my dream car though... maybe I'll just get both (Granted that I strike it rich, haha).

Turbo? Hmm... I don't even know if there are any around here...

the turbo's are very fun to drive but be prepared to work on it a lot if you don't take car of it or abuse it. n/a's can be just as fun.
