Lightbulb Hey! I'm a new RX-7 owner...

So I took a drive out to TN from the VA Beach area in VA to pick up my '91 RX-7. It was a good drive there and back. No real problems. She's not a turbo model and she doesn't idle quite right. She'll start around 500 rpm and as she get's hotter, the idle drops to about 100 rpm (or close to nil on the factory tach). There are times I can't even hear the exhaust. She's got a racing exhaust (no cat) and a K&N intake filter. Besides that, the rest is stock. Recently the RPM's "bounce" as in she'll drop to nil and then bounce up to about 250 and then drop again.

I've seen lots of documents/threads/writeups about a T2 and checking the TPS. Does anyone know where there's a writeup or something about an NA model?

Also, my buddy mentioned that she was running REALLY rich when she was doing this. Any ideas? I know about the "rat nest" of vacuum lines. I'm curious about the electrical system. How accurate is the volt meter in the dash?

I've picked up a Haynes Manual on the car BTW. They seem pretty good and I'm using one to rebuild my truck ('93 Toyota, 4wd, V6).

A few other things to cover:
-The belly plate in front of the radiator is missing, I'd like to get a new one before the 90+ degree summer heat hits. Any ideas on where to go to get one?

-The stock temp gauge I've heard to be inaccurate. Things like "it has 3 settings: cold, hot, you just fsck'd your motor". I'd like to get a better one. Any suggestions on make/model?

I've got other things I'd like to do to her but I'm trying to hit all the basics before summer comes blasting in with heat.

well, first off, to be as nice as possible, always use the search function as much as possible. you will be amazed as to how much info you can get by using that. not only does it answer all 4 of your questions, but most of the threads split off into other directions and can answer future questions.
SEARCH BUTTON, its your friend :-)
anywho, i know someone has the FSM in his sig, not sure who, might be micela (or w/e)

peace

FSM= Factory SHop/Service Manual

w/e= whatever

Do the basics of new plugs and wires, then try adjusting your Idle TPS (use the search function, loads of info!). With the knowledge on this forum you can fix virtually anything on your car.

I tried searching a little about the idle issue because it's top on the priority. Stalling out at a light ain't much fun.

Thanks for the help with the acronyms. I may not know them all, but I'll get there eventually.

There is a ****-ton of knowledge here on the site and I hesitated on even posting this thread. I'll sift through some stuff. If anyone has any new ideas or happened upon something that might help, post it. Worst case, someone else might find it useful when this thing gets archived.

You've probably found it by now, but there is an idle screw, I believe on the throttle body, that you can use to adjust the idle. Also, search for writeups on vacuum leaks; that could be an issue.

Honestly, I'm impressed your car can keep running down at 100rpms. There's gotta be SOMETHING really good about your engine! Oh, out of curiosity, how sure are you that the tachometer is reading correctly? The more I think about it, going down to 100rpms without stalling probably shouldn't be possible, so maybe your tach is wrong.
