Question Hesistation at high rpm GXL

1989 GXL with brand new alternator, plugs, wires, and battery. Engine has 7k miles on a streetport, but everything is stock, except for mazdaspeed intake. The MAF spring loaded thing is clean.

Car hesitates at above 6000k rpms, and really has problems going farther than 7500, 8000, even when under no load in neutral it has trouble getting to red line. It will either just stay at an rpm of its choice or barely go higher.

I suspect this could be a fuel pump issue? (but wouldn't it have leaned out and blown up?)

Clogged cat, bad o2?

I read about the 4000k hesitation, but this is at higher rpms and it says not to reground an s5.

Appreciate your help!

Don't know if it's the same or not.

Bought my car with this type of problem. Had to remove tranny for something else, found 2 ground wires not hooked up, me and my dad fixed them and the car no longer does the hesitation. Will go all the way and then some now.

Maybe a ground didn't get hooked back up after the streetport? After it stops raining, I'll go out and snap pics of the 2 wires.

Here's the 1st ground that wasn't hooked up.

There's a small box sensor that goes under the slave cylinder that bolts on the tranny.

Then here's the 2nd. This wire bolts directly on top of the tranny.

Idk if maybe one got disconnected. But it's worth a look. Hopefully one did, or hopefully somebody with more knowledge can come along and help. Good luck man.

so that first wire doesn't seem to exist next to the oil filter. i can't spot the box sensor, and the one on the firewall on the passenger's side is completely non-existant and there are no dangling wires, just a bolt and the metal strap piece

Other than that though, does it look like a wire can go on there like mine? And also, do you see the white plug anywhere like in the 1st pic?

This pic is from my 88 vert as I don't have my 88 GXL close enough to snap a pic.

Can you snap a pic?
