Help: Spark plug's thread snapped off inside plug hole

While installing new spark plugs, I had the threading of a plug break off on me. It broke clean off at the base, leaving the entire plug's thread still tightly in the hole.

Any ideas on how to get this out?

Wow you must have been putting ALOT of torque on that thing. Try ez outs, reverse drill bits, etc. and try to remove it.

they're NGKs. I think maybe the previous owner may have stripped the threads in the housing if thats at all possible.... whenever I put plugs in that hole, they always looked a little bit "off" to me.

Same thing happened today. I looked at the plug, didnt quite look right, so I took it out and inspected. Looked fine, so I put it back in, started to tighten and then it just fell loose.

Really didn't have all that much torque on it at all. Blah, this sucks.

The funny thing is, when I was at the parts store before installing them, the counter kid said: "Now, if these plugs break or snap off or anything like that, you know, just bring em back and you'll get a free replacement!" I even made a mental note of it because of the way he said it.

So .... was this a warning from a guardian angel? Or was he channeled by the cruel god, foreshadowing my future failure?

if you do happen to get it out and there is no damage ..Use ANTISIEZE on your spark plug threads!..it is SO much easier to get them out..when I changed mine I put some on..they come out smooooth!

I used that stuff on all my exhaust too and it was super easy to take off when I got new components.

Heh, thanks for the link, I feel a little bit better now. I searched the forums around here and was surprised that this hadn't happened to anyone else on here yet .... or at least, no one had made a thread about it.

Update:

Got it out with an easy out, no problem. The interesting thing was that the plug broke at the actual THREADS. so the ceramic part of the plug was already out. That left a lot of room for the easy out to go right in and bring it out.

It didnt take much to get it out, either; like I said, it hadnt been overtorqued which leads me to believe the plug had a defect. Either way, she's functional again and I am happy.

Thanks for the help.
