help plz: can't shift in gear once car start.

hi, thx for lookin, first i have a 91 na rx7, but this week suddenly i cant get it to shift in gear. i was just waitin at a stop light and it happened. i changed the clutch and the tranny 2 yrs ago. rite now when i press down the clutch pedal, there is no push back feeling, it is spongy and muckh lighter than before. and once the car starts i cant get it in to gear even when i press the cluth pedal, is there anyone who can give me a bit of advice about this. thank you all.

check the clutch hydralic system first. It may have sprung a leak and hence you have no clutch. You can't go into gear with the car running w/o the clutch.

Heres an idea

Car off, put the car in gear, clutch in, and start the car. If the car leaps forward (or reverse depending on gear), you know the clutch hyrdalics or mecahnics are screwed.

Check your clutch fluids. You've somehow either gotten air into the system of have leaked all your fluid out.

if your fluid levels look good and there aren't any drips, it could also be one of the cylinders with bad seals (master/slave)

but def check the fluid levels and bleed the system.

If the fluid is full, then you most likely have a hydraulic problem...

Have someone watch the clutch fork while you depress the clutch, to see if it moves. Also, make SURE you checked the CLUTCH fluid, not the BRAKE fluid.

Yeah.. when my pilot bearing finally went I couldn't get the car into any gear.. if you want to continue to drive (bad idea) start the car with the car in first and the clutch in and rev the crap out of it to get it to break free.

1) check fluid...if low, replace and bleed system.

2) adjust clutch pedal

3) replace clutch master cyl

4) replace clutch slave cyl

5) tear trans out and replace clutch, TOB, and pilot bearing. be sure to clean and lube trans input shaft and inspect for burrs or dirt, as well as inspect the clutch fork and pivot ball.

Somewhere among all that you WILL find the problem.

I gotta replace the pilot bearing on my truck DOH! Mine would grind when going into reverse or first, (no synchros) It is also hard to shift sometimes. I think thats the problem that you have.

The spongy pedal feel points to the clutch hydraulics - master /slave / or hose.

The fluid should be clear as beer. If it has a dark tint, the master cylinder is worn.

thx for all your help, me and my dad just took down the transmission this week, and notice that there is nothing noticably wrong with it, so i think the problem is back to the master and slave cylinders, so we got a rebuild kit for the cylinders. hopefully that can fix the problem.

oh.. man!.. ahahaa.. i posted a bit late.. and you have already torn down your tranny.. sorry man!!.. but its the master and slave!!.. ahaha i can bet on it!.. i had the same problem.. when started.. car will not go into first of reverse.. you would have to stick it in gear then start.. but if you try pumping the clutch before start.. or before gearing it works alright... but change the master and the slave and it should be fine.. i got mine from nopi as well.. my stainless hose some how took a bit long.. but the master/slave got here fast... it looks nice. and works just as new now!... but good luck..

I had the same problem and mine was the clutch slave cylinder. I notice the leak when I was about to lossen the tranny bolts. I go the 10 dollar rebuild kit from Auto zone and it worked fine. Those prices at nopi.com are good. The slave cylinder at Autozone was like 70 or so.
