Help needed: Will a transmission from a 1988 base or gxl fit in my 1990 gtu?

I think the trans is bad in my 1990 gtu

The local junk yard has a 1988 base and a 1988 gxl, which trans should I ask for?

If so will it bolt straight in or will I need to change things?

Sorry if this question has been asked in the past, I did a search and did not come up with anything. (tried, “trans swap” and “trans 88 90”)

By the way the symptoms are, car shakes all the time at speeds above about 40, shakes below 40 when the trans is under load, and the speedometer stopped working.

Thanks,
Dave

I believe non-turbo transmissions from S4 and S5 are interchangeable. Either should be fine. The problem arises when you try to take a turbo tranny and put it in a non-turbo.

Those are symptoms of bad U joints. I suggest checking the rest of your drivetrain before installing a new transmission.

As for the speedo, check the drive cable.

Thanks, Roen
Just to clarify, the rx7 guy at the junk yard thinks it should work but his parts interchange manual says it won’t.
And yes both cars are n/a

Hecubus84,
I noticed the thread about bad u joints, but figured that the speedometer going at the same time indicated the trans, I will check the u joints first.

You can switch as long as you use the proper tranny mount according to the tranny.

In other words, use the 88's mount.
