YES! I had it on the passender side. Graphite cord comes out and FUCKED up my friends' shirts. IT IS A FEDERALLY MANDATED FIX. Take it to Mazda, they MUST fix it for the ENTIRE LIFE OF THE CAR.

THEY MUST. If they give you BS, take it up to Mazda's Corporate HQ. THIS IS A LEGALLYA MANDATED REPAIR.

It's FREE too, factory recall. once again, they MUST fix this for FREE.

Go here, click on vehicle and go from there to see it in writing from a GOVERNTMENT web site:

I got it done about a month ago. Worked out fine, they didnt give me any hassles

Thanks for posting that info and site. I had forgotten about the recall campaign since I left Mazda. I remember that back in 96 or early 97, there were 2 Japanese engineers that showed up with the Mazda Factory Rep at my shop one afternoon. They wanted to test every car with automatic belts that we had on the lot . They would not tell us at the time what was going on but I found out later from my rep that they were persuing a recall campaign. It wasn't much after that day that all dealers received notice of the recall. I never had any problem with my belts until about a month ago but I never cared much for the automatic setup anyway. I actually just removed the passenger (RF) belt assembly and track from the car. I opened the cable retractor (you know, the one that said "DO NOT OPEN") and pulled the cable out of the track. I reassembled the retractor after winding up all the excess cable and reinserting the end into the mouse which then was inserted back into the track. I did not plug any of the electrical connections back in to the car. Now, I have a non-automatic seat belt that is always in the retracted position. The seat belt now has to be unbuckled from the emergency release on the mouse but it functions just fine and is not going to fail in the event (God forbid) of an accident. I have much more trust in it now than I did with the original design. It is also less painful when passengers get out of the car and don't have the mouse hitting them SQUARE in the forehead! This was my triumph over Passive Restraints. I guess even Mazda realized that the idea SUCKED ***! ---Jeremy
