HELP! My In Dash Temp Gauge doesn't work

Just like I said, I got a 1988 TII and my temp gauge does not work. I warm up the motor and it doesn't move. The engine gets real hot, but still the gauge just sits at the bottom. The engine runs just as hot when the gauge worked, the needle used to sit at about 1/3 the way up.

Is it still safe to drive my car, and what the heck is wrong with it? Thermostat, wiring, etc...

Thanks
Scott

Hum....it is possible that the sensor has died. The coolant temp sensor in in the left side of the rear housing. Below the oil filter and below the oil pressure sensor. It is a small screw in sensor. Find it and see if it is connected. If so....take the connector off and ground it with the ignition on. Have a friend in the car and see if the gauge pegs. Do this quickly. If it pegs chances are the gauge works.

I am not sure if the ECU uses this sensor. I would guess it does not.

Now would be a good chance to get a real temp gauge.

Ya know I read in apost earlier that the ECU does use and read the temp sensor... Can anyone confirm this for sure..?

The first gen's wire for the temp sensor is located off the chassis harness... and that's what I used to get my guage in the dash to work.

The TII uses a wire off the engine harness to read the temp sensor, which I just left hanging there... so... IF the ECU does need that reading will a simple splice work...?

By the way... It's a 85GS w/a 87TII motor set-up.
