If you have a later model FC, like an s5, look at yor coolent gooseneck that connects to the manifold to see if there is a crack. S5's, at least mine, have a plastic coolent connector instead of the bulky metal ones that are prone to cracking if they get too old and dried out. If there is a crack, collent is prolly spraying out your system when it heats up under pressure and thus leaing your car without adequate coolent pumpung through it. OEM or at a junkyark you can prolly find a replacement for 3 to 5 dollars. Thats what I had to do and replacement is easy.

Be forewarned, though, to put in new bolts is it needs replacement. When I did mine, an old bolts head broke off the rest of it as I was screwing it in and I had tap a totally new hole after buying a carbide bit to drill it out. Not pretty and took me weeks to order the bit and fix. But I'm a bit off topic aren't I?

They are not the same. Get the mazda thermostat. DO ALL THAT YOU CAN TO PREVENT OVERHEATING, BUM RIDES IF YOU HAVE TO. You will probabley blow your coolant seals from overheating, which means it's rebuild time.

do not drive an overheated car, i blew 2 engines like that mom and dads car respectfully,

AND NO PEPBOYS THERMOSTAT IS NOT THE SAME, GO DOWN TO THE DEALER AND GET ONE.
BETTER 2 SPEND MORE ON A THERMOSTAT THAN AN ENGINE.

DO NOT DRIVE IT TILL FIXED

Do you have white smoke out the exhaust? Check for bubbles in the coolant, or do the geyser test.

White smoke means your seals are pretty much done.

you would need a new thermo if you have to rebuild your engine anyways

ohh.... if you ask me what you should do.... take your car to a mechanic, they could probably check your radiator for hc and stuff too
