Unhappy Help me please!

My trusted rx7 (1988 gxl) broke down today, and the mechanic can't find what's wrong... I was hoping I would find someone here willing to share some expertice. What happened, in a nutshell, was... The car in front of me slammed on their brakes, causing me to do the same, while I was changing gears from 3 to 2. I heard a bang in the engine and then it was like driving through mud. As soon as I stopped applying gas, the car died and when I tried to start it again, it sounded like the engine was flooding. My only theory is that it "got stuck in gear" or that some connection between the transmission and engine blew out...It also leeks coolant and oil, but I don't think these are related problems. If anyone can help me, I'd be forever grateful!

The engine is newly rebuilt with only 20,000 miles on it. Does that make a difference at all? (desperately hoping...) Thank you all!!!
