Help me decide what car to get! Is this one any good?
Ok, I am looking for a car to mess around with for the summer. I have come across this car: http://dallas.craigslist.org/car/664382133.html
It is a 2nd gen that is said to run and just needs a new battery. It is rough around the edges but I am not worried about looks. I just want something I can mess with over the summer.
I have been reading the stickys and there is a lot of good info there. What I really want to know is if that car is a good deal?
He got it at an auction a few months ago and it does run. I could probably get him down a little bit in price so should I even consider this or wait for something else? I had been looking for an MR2 to mess with, or an old supra (with normal engines) but this caught my eye.
This would be my first project car and I just want something that won’t suck my wallet dry but is fun/pretty easy to work on and fix up for pretty cheap. Then in a year or 2 when I have had my fun sell it and move on.
So my real question is, is this a good car for someone that knows there way around cars and is not afraid to try something new to get as a first project car? Or are they money pits? Are the rotary engines easy to work on when compared to a normal engine? Is that a good price for one? I only have about $1000 for whatever car I get right now and would slowly build it up over time.
I am just looking for something to do in my spare time and make a car that is fun to drive around with possibly some minor track use from time to time.
Any input would be great! Thanks.

Rx7's are addictive.....the tend to suck ur wallet dry even though theres nothing wrong with them
Yes, it will give u a chance to learn about the feared rotary engine.
Yes
Yes if you kno what your doing

And by money pits i know full well that any car i get will be one because i make it one, i just want to make sure that i am the one decideing what the $$$ goes to and not the car, if you know what I mean lol. And yes i would test it and make sure it runs before i bought it. as well as do a full fluid change (do that to any car i get, no matter what).
Forgot to ask about miles on it, i will need to do that DOH!
So price wise, that is a good deal if it relly runs? And just in case the engine did need a rebuild, about how much does it cost to rebuild one of these?
Thanks.

It has 94,XXX miles on it and 5 speed tranny. He said it looks like it had set for awhile before he got it but he filling all the fluids before doing anything.
I also talked him down to $800 cash if i can get that and talk my way into getting it.
To me it looks like a desent deal.

darn it, mised out on that deal by 15mins to someone that lived closer then the 1.5 hour drive I had.
So now i am back to waiting for a deal to come along. So i have a few other Questions.
Prior to this car i was looking more at the MR2. Comparing these cars which is more fun to drive and can be built/maintained easier?
End goal? With either car, more a sleeper car at least to start out with, so all $$ would be put into the engine. that can do some track racing from time to time and is fun to drive on the weekends.
Would like as close to 300WHP+ as possible, how easy is that with the 1.3 rotor? Engine swaps might also be a possibility since i only have about $1000 for the car and finding a running car for that much is real hard. But over time i could get the engine and such.
What is needed out of the box to make a Gen 2 RX7 (can't afford a gen 3 and don't like gen 1) a desent track (both autocross and drag) perfromer?
