Question Help! Buying another FC TII, Idle question..

Hey guys, I am about to buy another FC TII 87, But i am not sure, The body is mint, only thing is the owner primered so it has no paint job, I Don't really care about interior or paint since i will remove the interior and re paint the exterior.. Here is what is doing, My previous motors that blew on my other 87TII acted different than this one i am thinking of buying, My 87TII when it blew the motor shook alot and sounded as if it had cam in it, This one you have to hold the gas pedal at about 1400 RPM or it cuts off, But at 2000+ it feels very solid, No studder no Smoke..But it wont stay on..I am thinking the motor is blown, but i can't tell..No Smoke, And motor does not really shake, it just doesnt stay idling, cuts off.. What can i check for or is just the motor is gone? The owner wants $1,500 for it which to me is a good deal anyways because of the condition of the car..As i said no dings at all, just needs paint..Help.. Thanks sorry this is a long post..

Here is a couple of things to check. Item 1, the TPS. Unplug it, if the car idles, you need a new one. Item 2, vacuum leaks. Spray the various hoses with carb cleaner, when you find a leak the engine will change RPM's suddenly as you spray the spot. Hope this helps.

I've heard this problem being caused by the BAC being stuck closed......but do the Turbo's have a BAC? it may be n/a only. Sorry this doesn't help much.

I have the exact same problem with my '87 T2. Idle is shaky and dithers. If the idle is set below 1,000 RPM, the engine dies. I had to raise the idle to about 1,400 to have the engine idle.

Yes, my T2 does have BAC.

I haven't tried the TPS, but I've been told if it's out of adjustment that the same problems will happen.

Hopefully this will be an easy fix! For once, there seems to be light at the end of a dark tunnel.

I side with the Keith man. I'd give the turbo inlet duct a good spray of starter fluid at the joint that meets the turbo inlet. I, like many folk on this site, have found cracks in the duct under the clamp. Causes erratic to no idle worth speaking about. Hard area to spray with the bottom tray on the engine. Best to take it off and give it a good look, but that might be a problem if you don't own it yet. Also the two hose on the bac could be a problem. Sounds a lot like unauthorized air leak. Also there is a Air Bypass Valve on the back of the Turbo Inlet Duct, that might be leaking internaly. I read about that one. Never experienced it.

Yes, the TII has a BAC.

Deeperimage- What does the engine sound like? You can usually tell just by the way it sounds when you turn the motor over. Another thing you can do is to pull a spark plug off of rotor #1, (disconnect CAS to ensure it doesn't spark) and crank the engine. You should have 3 even "whooshes". Repeat for rotor #2. That should give you an idea as to the condition of the motor.

AHh Awesome, I will definitely try the spark plug thing, since i have seen it done i kinda have an idea.. THe Egine sounds like its choking on air, Runs out of breath and dies, but it starts right back up on the first turn, Also the only gauge i had to go by was the stock boost gauge, at 1500 rpms the vacum seem to work fine and i inscreased RPM it went to 0 and stayed there, In the gears it made boost and the motor felt very strong, On my last motor i blew on my previous TII when i was accelerating it would have studdering around 4500-5500 rpms, This one pulls very smooth to about 7,200 rpms, I didnt not rev it any higher to avoid further damage if it is in fact damaged. Another question i had about the 87TII is, Did they come with POWER STEERING or NOT? this one does not have it, and its been a while since i owned my other TII to remember this..Thanks alot guys this is definitely helping me out alot.. I am printing this page out before i go back today to try everything..

Power steering was an option in 87. My car doesn't have it, but MOST TII's did have it. Most of the "hard core" guys think no PS is better. Personally I don't care

Hey there! You in one of your last post gave a very important clue. I'm almost sure you just have a large air leak. Just a few weeks ago a fellow wrote in that his car would start but only run for a few seconds. Started right up each time. Just would'nt run for long.Swore he had no air leaks. Busted his b...s working on it. Finaly found that he did indeed have a air leak where the intercooler joined the intake manifold.

Yeah, I had two first gens before and those didn't come with PS, so its not a big deal, but i just didnt want to buy it if the Rack and Pinion shaft was broken because that cost about $800 to replace... no PS i think would be more reliable than having it..I wish you guys where here to come take a look at it with me...I know its only $1500 dollars but still, thats alot of PS2 games i could buy you know..hahaa.

Yeah i figured, Anyhow i will let you know. It might be next week when you get a chance, I went and drove it today again and here are some other things i am noticing, I drove for about 10-15 minutes, The car is not overheating at all, Studders, I can hear the turbo spool up very fast, Oil gauge seemed okay.. I disconnected the afc and it made no difference, i think that thing is shot out so thats why it made no diff, also it feels as if though the turbo is not blowing into the engine...i remember JJ had similar problem on his 90 TII and once he connected the loose ic pipe the car ran like a dream...I think either something is cracked or loose from the turbo/ic to the intake..But once again i went at night because thats the only time the owner is home.. ...Dammit i wish i was a damn rotary master mechanic..As i said if i hold the gas at even 1200 rpms its perfect, and unlike when its blown that the turbo will be making boost very low since its using the turbo to make compression..THis one just has the vac right at 0 the way it should be..Sheit sheit..
