help this big NOOB!!!

hey everybody,

this is my first time on this forum and i need some advice, options, and thoughts.

a friend of mine is selling a 1988 manual, non-turbo RX-7 for $500 without A/C. it has 120,000 miles on it and i'm wondering if this car is worth it?

**what are the pro's and con's of this car?

**is the factory motor and transmission strong and dependable?

**is this car very difficult to work with?

**does this car have lots of potential with autocrossing and drag racing?

**are repairs very costly?

** what different models are there and its power outputs.

i'm very interested in getting into rotary engines since i believe this is a cheap price for a frame.

i've been into Hondas (yes, yes go ahead and smirk at us rice boys cause i do it too ) and i've swapped, built motors before and i'd like to seek out another horizon.

thanks for all the advice and i look forward to talking and learning from you peeps!!!

Yes. $500 is cheap. Make sure to get a compression test on the motor.

**what are the pro's and con's of this car?

Pros: RWD, unique, great handling Cons: won't be a drag racer, crappy gas mileage

**is the factory motor and transmission strong and dependable?

Yes and yes. You might get a little grinding in 2 and 3rd gear.

**is this car very difficult to work with?

Depends, everyday stuff is easy, internal motor stuff is best left to an expert.

**does this car have lots of potential with autocrossing and drag racing?

Great potential for autocrossing and road racing...nope to drag racing. NA rotaries have very little torque and you need lots of torque to get down the 1/4 mile.

**are repairs very costly?

Not any more expensive that any other older imported sportscar. *grin* If the car is in good shape when you get it and you take care of it...there really shouldn't be any repairs.

** what different models are there and its power outputs.

The 1986-1988 NA's RX-7's had 147HP, the 1989-1991 NA RX-7's had 160.

i'm very interested in getting into rotary engines since i believe this is a cheap price for a frame.

I hope that helps and you can read all that. If you are looking for a fun, unique car that can really hold it's own in the twisties then you've found it. If you are looking for a red light warrior...then look at the turbo versions or a good 'ol American V-8.

Oh, welcome to the forum BTW!

to find out alot of info look at the fc faq on the top of this forum.

also why dont u ask ur friend for advice? unless hes a dumbass to the rx7...

what do u consider hard to work with?
u must learn somethings about the car be4 jumping into buying one.

one thing i am going to tell u is that, the parts for these cars are not cheap. good thing is that they cars are quick than hondas with less money moding the engine.

also...to find any question u might have...CLICK THE SEARCH BUTTON AT THE TOP RIGHT.

u gotta do some resarch for yourself. this forum gets these newbie question every week.

GOOD LUCK!!

just do a search on the forum, you can find all the info you would ever want. Seriously, just look through the threads for about an hour, and you'll learn a LOT. The n/a's can go 200k+ if properly maintained (like mine) :-D I am still fairly new to this car (only had it since early june) but here is the short answers to your questions

yes, it is mostly likley worth $500
pros = very fun, fairly fast, great handling
cons = they are getting old, and stuff breaks.
motor and transmission are strong and dependable, but with 120k, it really depends on how well it was maintained
yes, it has tons of potential with autoX and ok potential for drag racing (you would have to do a turbo conversion for that w/out spending LOTS of money), but most go with autoX
like anything else, it depends on the type of repair (and what is your oppinion of "costly?)
search threads for diferent models.

coolio!! thanks for all the advice...

i'll do some searching now. i guess costly to me would mean having to replace tranny syncros every 30K miles, or having a gasket blow out on me everytime i rev. the motor.

thanks once again
