Help! AutoX tomorrow - S5 engine dies on hard left turn

I put on some sticky tires in preperation for an autox school, and now my car can turn hard enough that I'm getting a wierd problem. On hard left turns the engine will shut off, I haven't had it happen on right turns, but I don't really have a good way to test it.

Its nearly impossible to diagnose, since during normal driving the car's fine. Any ideas?

Or low fuel. Or some loose wiring in the engine bay. The low oil level sensor is on the left side of the engine too, which would normally only sound a buzzer as the oil sloshed away from it, unless your electrical system is all buggerd, then who knows what might happen.

it happened with a full tank, but i'll pull the pump to see if its the filter.

I'm guessing its an electrical issue, but its going to be hell to find.

I have the same problem when I drift. If I go in to hard to the left or to the right it stalls, even if I stay on the gas. It just dies. Fuel filter is fairly new, walbro pump is new, injectors are new, rewired the pump. How much gas do you have in the tank? You could be banking to hard and having the gas splash around and get air into the line. Thats the only thing I can think of, although for me, I had almost a full tank so I dunno. Any idea's from anyone?

Also stalled once while doing donuts, spun it to fast and it died.

I also had this problem when I first got my car. I was drifting and it would suddenly cut out going around a corner sideways, like someone was pressing on the brakes. I figured it was low fuel, but then I tried it again with a full tank and it still did it. I think the next thing I did was get some fuel injector cleaner, which i believe cleaned out the system, and I think that fixed the problem. Haven't had it do it to me since. You might try that before you go and spend a bunch of money on new equipment.

I should change my name to BudgetDrifter4444.

I'll try the cleaner thanks! I can drift, just when I go in to hard and spin it, then it cuts out.

NO, a cleaner will only solve the problem about 10% of the time (and then still have the problem come back in the next 10k miles).

Replace the sock. Its a $5 part and a 15 minutes job

Thanks for the help, though I was hoping that wasn't it, since the screws holding the pump to the tank are horribly rusted.

I'll give it another go, but I really don't want to have to drill a stripped screw out of a gas tank.

The sock is the pump filter? If so its pretty new. Only has about 4K on it, if that. How does the sock
make it shut off on hard banks? Thanks for the help Ice!

Or if you don't plan on keeping the car very long, and you dont want to part out the fuel system, just drill a hole in the sock.

Nah, the sock is at the bottom of your fuel pump. It's easy to get to it, unlike most cars, you dont have to drop the tank to get to the fuel pump. Just roll up the carpet in the rear, remove the four phillips screwes and you'll see the fuel pump cover. Depressurize your fuel system and open your gas cap. Then pull the fuel tubes out (Dont get them mixed up) and disconnect the electrical connection. Just unscrew around the whole fuel pump plate (careful not to strip those screws) and the whole pump assembly just slides right out.

Since your autoX is TOMMOROW, see if a mazda location doesnt have a sock in stock. If they don't then just use compressed air from the inside of the sock and blast it out. Then poke it with a large sewing needle about a billion times. Thats a temporary solution only to be used in a desperate case, and it WILL reclog in about 10K miles (I think less). Not only that, but it is probably letting garbage into your fuel pump. Just order the filter

Fuel starvation! The pump is on the left side of the tank, and when you turn left, all the fuel goes to the right side of the tank!

Somtimes this can also happen if one of your fuel pump gaskets are bad! Thats not likely unless somone had them out and reinstalled them without greasing them up.

I removed the fuel pump sock (just a one day temporary solution), and sure enough the problem dissapeared. I ended up having to use vice grips to break the screws loose, but it wasn't as bad as the amount of corrosion made it seem.

Good way to require the replacement of the pump as well as the sock...

All that crap that the sock was keeping out of the pump, is still in the tank
