help 89 NA problems

i bought a 89 that was rebuilt and im have a few problems when i go to start it i cranks and cranks somtimes its starts and that quickly dies off. if it doesnt start it processeds to flood. im kinda thinking there a timing issue but im new to rotarys it seems to have good compression and to be getting spark because it starts sometimes

Wow dude I have the problem.

When it turns on and the RPM shoots up to 3, it just drops down to 0 and shuts down immediately right?

If so, it's probably your starter. I had the same problem with my starter. When I switched out the starter, my car ended up having a lose flywheel.

So now in high school and in auto class, I have to bust out the transmission myself and tighten that son-of-a-bitch.

Good luck. I'm not sure how to help otherwise.

It will also do that if you didn't plug your afm in, or if you have nasty vacuum leaks

I'm gonna go out on a limb here but im pretty sure the starter is not your problem........ you can also rule out timing. This is a common issue and could be combination of many things..... have you searched the archives to get some ideas?

If it spins the engine enough to get it started, its not the starter. So your saying it cranks just fine, but rarely starts and if it does it dies out shortly afterward? Rotaries will eat up spark plugs, check yours out and clean/ replace if necessary. If they are really fouled it can lead to a no-start and flooding.

If you can get it to start then will it stay running if you give it a bit of throttle?
