Help? '88 GTU
Could anyone help me out? My ride's having trouble starting but I don' t think that this is the usual flooding issue.
I took my "new" '88 GTU into the shop to get the pulsation damper etc. replaced and the guy found some other things wrong with it while the manifold was off so I had him fix them. After I got the car back (after way, way too long) it had some trouble starting and some weird idiot light problems. Specifically, after a long drive and then a short trip into a store or something, the ignition wouldn't start it, but a push generally would. Anyhow,I started looking out when I was idling and it gave me a charge light warnign, but only when I had the parking brake engaged...so don't engage the p-brake, right? I figured I had to change the battery, but the alarm/lights etc worked fine.
So I finally ended up on a hot day coming back from the store and fireing it up and getting every light at once? I push-started it and got to the shop, bought a battery and it started okay. But now it won't stat at all - I hear a couple of clicks. I got a couple of trips out of it, once by placing the transmission in first and cranking, another by taking out the EGI Comp fuse and replacing it. But I don't think it's flooding - because I only get the click and a click, no turning of the engine at all. So my questions:
What does it sound like when an engine's flooded? Does the engine crank and then fail? Can an engine be jump/push started when it's flooded?
Do flooded engines get progressively more difficult to start, as in my case? Or would this be the starter or switch getting more and more out of whack or what? Did these shops **** this beautiful car?
As an ancillary question, the FC alternator is pretty notorious for low output and mine's is hideous. Is there a good aftermarket alternator or quick fix?
I've done the
"1: pull EGI Comp fuse, crank and floor the gas for fifteen seconds, replace the fuse and crank as normal
2:repeat" fix a few times and nothing sounds any different.
Any help would me much appreciated.
