Question Hello! & Beep / Ring Noise Q

Hello and greetings to all!

I'd just like to introduce myself - I'm a long time reader, first time poster here at RX7Club.com ! I recently aquired an '87 RX-7 NA (for $Cheap!) and I couldn't be any happier! It's definitely a long term project car and it's been at the top of my list of dream cars for a while now.

There's already been some work done to my 007 (rat's nest removal, air pump removed, a/c gone, aftermarket exhaust), yet the list of "to-do's" is far from complete! <- that's alright! More to learn!

My first question is about a constant Beep / Ring that never turns off. I noticed that the sound starts even before the engine is cranked (just when you turn the ignition forward one notch) and rings until the key is turned back to the insert position. At first, I thought it had to be related to the door ajar light, but I really don't know what the ring is supposed to indicate. It's just a single tone that continues, and it's definitely not the key reminder...

There are four beepers/buzzers on a coupe.

The CPU, which indicates things like the key in and door open or headlights on or alternator failure. The CPU is in the drivers kick panel.

The Factory security, which beeps a single beep when armed. (behind the glove box on a 86-88, in the CPU on a 89-91).

The power steering computer. It will beep indicating a failure (please read the FAQ). It is located behind the drivers dash speaker.

And finally the over rev buzzer, which will indicate engine speed at redline, low oil, or low coolant. It is located on the back of the gauge cluster.

You will need to determin what location the beep/buzzer is coming from.

Alright, I checked it out - and the neverending "beeeeep" is not coming from the CPU - for sure. I don't think it's the power steering since I have a '87 base model... so it must be low oil or low coolant?

The beep seems to be coming from the dash, and it comes on when the key is turned to "on"...

...still investingating...

remember, you might have perfectly fine oil or coolant level, and a defective gauge.. for example, if i go out and turn the key on, my oil gauge goes STRAIGHT UP

Is it a "beep" or more like a "buzz"? The overrev alarm and the low coolant/oil alarm is more like a buzzer than a beeper. Is it a constant beep, like beeeeeeeeeeeeep, or does it repeat, like beep beep beep beep? If it's the repetative beeping it's the power steering computer.

It's a long and constant beeeeeep - I'm sure it's coming from the power steering computer too. I'll have to check my fluid levels next... thanks for all the help peeps!

Btw, has anyone every come across this problem with their CPU: It constantly rings "beep-beep" when the door is ajar, and even when the key isn't in the ignition? I think it's probably something inside the CPU (bad soldering?)...
