Thats not gas smell thats the newest fragrance called "Rotary". FC's are known for having a gas smell...but if you take out the CAT expect it to increase...I have no CAT and my gas cap/lid is shaved so....my vented gas cap vents into my trunk (vert) and my car smells like gas to high hell! Four foot flames are worth it!

so its safe?
NO....if you just started to notice it..hell no..dont run the risk of an engine fire.

If it's an s4, CHECK YOUR PULSATION DAMPER. It is at the end of the primary fuel rail, towards the front of the car. It has a diaphragm on the inside to absorb pulses in the fuel flow, and when it fails, the diaphragm tears and drips fuel onto the hot motor, causing a fire.

Definitely check the PD, like Ted and 88 just mentioned. May want to check the charcoal canister as well. It absorbs your fuel tank vent odors, and I have heard they can become ineffective over time.
If you have a S4 its under your upper intake connected to your fuel rail...its not easy to get to...could take you a few hours labor if you have never ripped one apart before...its a little yellowed plastic cap ..inside is a screw...it falls off..dont just tighten it back..replace it!
When looking at the front of the engine, look between the alternator and the water-filler neck on the water pump housing. Now look under the upper intake manifold. You will see the PD either with or without the yellow plastic cap. It looks just like the fuel pressure regulator (FPR) on the front end of the secondary fuel rail, but it has no vacuum line.
Also Check Under the Uim.. I had leaks there a few times.. the heat Cooks those fuel lines Sitting Right over the engine! Its hard to see under the uim need to look from many angles
Banjo bolt modification-

If you can't find the cause of the smell I would pull of the upper intake manifold.
Replace all of your fuel hoses and vacuum lines while your in there as well as do the banjo bolt modification to your fuel rail.
Do you still have the emissions equipment installed?
If not what about your charcoal canister?
If nothing, then what did you do about your vent line coming from the tank that is against the firewall on the drivers side of the engine bay? I've noticed a strong fuel smell to come from that vent line when I removed all of the emissions equipment.
Any leaks down by the fuel filter?
Does your gascap make a "whoosh" sound when you unscrew it?
If not you could have a leak somewhere in the vacuum lines from the tank or the top lid of the tank or even your gas cap is defective and not holding a vacuum in the tank and the smell could be coming from there as well.
Pull up your rear carpet and remove the silver cover plate which will reveal your fuel tank. You will see 2 fuel lines and a vent line if I remember correctly. Possibly one of those lines is leaking.

All FC drivers carry a fire extinguisher right??? I do.. a really small one fits in any of the compartments.
Pop open that upper intake manifold, I have a leaking pulsation dampner on my S5 Vert at the moment that I am trying to figure out what I am going to do with. Once you take the UIM off, pressurize the system using the yellow plug on the passenger side strut tower (jump the connectors with a wire and make sure to plug the incoming fuel line to the fuel rail that you took off). Do this for 5-10 seconds.
You should definetly see the leak after this.

let the fuel pump run for a bit, it is probably seeping out of some place. Once the lines are pressurized you will find it. Try running your finger along the ends of the pulsation dampner and around the ends of the fuel hoses. keep looking, you will find it.
