Heating Questions

I have a 1988 rx7, cruising the temp gauge stays at quater way. When i start smashing on it it starts to go up past halfway. If I start going fast like full throttle second and third thats when it starts to past the halfway mark. It mainly happens when I stay in boost to long in any gears. Is this normal or should I start upgrading my cooling system?

check coolant level?it runs hotter when its getting low. radiator fins clogged up or bent all kinds? anything past halfway is too hot.

Unless you have a very powerful modified engine, no it's not normal. The most likely causes are low coolant level caused by leaks (but that should sound the warning buzzer), a stuck thermostat, low system pressure from a faulty radiator cap or a clogged radiator (either clogged tubes reducing coolant flow or clogged fins reducing airflow. It's not the fan because it only heats up under load.

A good start would be to use a chemical flush on the cooling system, and a refill with a fresh coolant/water mix. Install a new thermostat and radiator cap from Mazda at the same time.
