Headlight problems

my friend just bought an RX-7 base model, and he's too lazy to get on this board and type his question up, so i'm doing the best i can, and hopefully i can get the info straight.....

basically, his high beams don't work when his headlights are up and on, but when he just flips up the lights (just pop them up, the little switch above the headlights) and pulls back on the lever, they come on, also, they come on (i believe) when the headlights are down and he does the flash to pass thing that i know all of us make sure to do when we plan on passing somebody

any ideas? it's obviously some sort of wiring problem or something seeing as how everything works just under different circumstances, my limited knowledge of electric stuff leads me to believe it has something to do with a relay perhaps, and if so, which one?

9 times out of 10, headlight problems are due to the switch.

well, he finally decided to bring it to my house, we looked at it, and a relay under the hood, bolted on the crossmember above the radiator, had a huge hole in it, it looked rusted.... i'm not sure how the original owner did that, but we took the same relay out of my car and tried it on his and everything worked, so that was the problem.... i honestly don't know how a hole could be put in the relay, unless it was broken and water and stuff got inside, but anyway thanks a bunch for the help
