Having trouble with new speakers

Hey there

I went to Fry's this weekend and bought two 6.5" Blaupunkt speakers for my '87 GXL RX-7. It had no speakers before this. I installed them and only one was working. To check that it wasn't a broken speaker I switched them. The same side was the only one that worked again, so it's not a broken speaker, they both work fine. My right speaker side in my hatch won't work. I have a stock '88 stereo and it's all plugged in. The one side that doesn't work will sometimes make a "bump bump bump" noise, almost like a mini mini sub. So it seems like something is happening, but it sure isn't music.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Did you make sure all the connections are good (to the speaker and CD/cassette player?) And also did you replace the wires?

Trace the wires until you find the problem...might as well replace the wires with something new.

I read in the FAQ that the stock stereos can only handle 15 watts per rear speaker or something -- could that have something to do with it?

NOPE, ohm could though (but i don't think that is your problem).

I know it sounds stupid, but did you check the balance settings on the radio?

Ditch the stock stereo dude... sounds to me like the right channel is shot to hell.... The $125 Sony MP3 player i dumped in the last RX7 i fixed and sold was about 150% better than the stock stereo that was in it even though it worked perfectly.

ALSO.... the stock stereo dosent have enough *** to drive a set of modern speakers with heavy magnets and re-enforced cones (don't know waht series blue-dots you got though).... whatever you do, its pretty much going to sound like moose dung.

Ask for a good stereo for x-mas.

Also.... When i retro fitted MY TII... the mounting kit i got cam with a blockoff plate for the space under the cd player that used to be taken up by the big assed factory radio... it makes a nice mounting place for me Fuel Pressure Gauge and my Profec-b head unit!!!!

There is a company that uses the stock brackets for the 7 with an aftermarket CD playa. Plus go aftermarket, nearly anything you can buy would be better

Thanks for all the help.

I suggest just buying an amped headunit and running your own speaker wire. It's really easy, and works great, also if you have a problem, it's wired direct.

The stock sound system has different built in amps etc, all in all, the stock system is crap.

Also, remember if you get an aftermarket headunit, get a relay for your stock antenna.

make sure to bypass the stock amps, all the stock speakers for s4's had amps and they dont work too well with aftermarket speakers and head units so bypass them and it should work fine. i used upgraded speakers with my stock deck and they worked, worked even better when i got a new unit

jus rip it all out, (stock) stereo, stock speakers, stock amps, stock wires, and go from the ground up.
