Having electrical problems... CAR WONT TURN OFF...

I think it may have something to do with my ignition switch...
basically my problem is... my car wont turn off...
Its a Series 5 Turbo.

first i thought oh ok i must've screwed up the turbo timer wiring... (it has been working for at least 2months without a problem) so i decided to take it out and leave it out... but i've just finished doing that and nope it aint that...

if i turn the key to the off position and take it out of the ignition barrel the car still runs... if i try to rev it its like its hesitating to rev... and once i do get the engine turned off by either stalling it or overloading the electricals with the key out (by pressing both power window buttons + power sunroof) the reds will remain on. and after a long while they will turn off?....

very wierd... it happened out of nowhere last night... i havnt done anything to the car for a while now... its wierd...

Probably a worn ignition switch....But are you SURE you didn't cause any shorts when you installed your turbo timer?

your windows shouldn't have power with the key out. You need to replace/repair the igition switch.

If I'm reading this right, both IG1 & IG2 are staying on.

Maybe a short near the ingition switch?

I also like the alternator idea. Been there.....done that myself. Got the two small wires crossed. Gotta work at it to do that. You might see what happens if you pull the small plug off on the alternator, start the car and then turn the key off to see if the engine will now die.

no i'm sure it wasnt to do with the turbo timer... because even after i've removed it.. the problem still occurs...

now one wierd thing i just found is... well.. earlier i was having problems with my headlights... i replaced the whole cluster region with new switches and it seems to be fixed... but now this has happened.. .so i thought ok thats pretty wierd... i had a look at the fuse box in the engine bay, when i pull out the headlight fuse... "reds" will go out... (this is with the key out and engine off) if i put the fuse back on they will come on again...

beats me...

YOU used the term *goes off after a while by itself*, or words to that effect. So, did you know that the rear window defroster has a timer????? My latest and better guess is that your getting a back feed thru that timer to the bus and feeding the pwr windows/engine etc. So prove me right. PUll the 15amp defroster fuse in the crew compartment. I'll bet that will fix your situation. Later you WILL find that the turbo timer wiring is related to this problem thru the defroster timer relay.

I don't think the Main Fuse can cause the pwr windows to stay operable. Engine, yes. Winders ...nope. Bad ignition switch, yes, and quite possible. But I'm holding out for the defroster timing wiring being involved.
