Has anyone done this?
I was thinking about cutting some metal out from the firewall, but the area I am talking about removing is where the in cabin air system gets its fresh air from..
Would removing some of the metal from the engine side help bring in cooler air to the rear of the engine?

I believe you are talking about the panel that has your VIN correct. You can cut part of it out...no prob. You will notice that it is only a panel that is "glued" to the chassis.

Yes thats the exact area I am talking about removing..
But maybe more like remove all the metal all the way across and leave strips of metal intact for strenght..
I am worried about water and such, but that can be handled.
I am more concerned about getting cooler air in..

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
You wouldn't increase air flow in directly, but increase air flow out.
The draw back is that you will be structurally and resale value compromising the vehicle. Mazda already removed all the metal they could without effecting the structural ridgity of the vehicle. removing more could result in a death trap in even a minor accident
