GXL Track Car?

Hey,

I'm looking to build up a good project car for autocross and drifting. I would like a GTU, but they are rare. Can I build up a GXL to work just as well? The main things I'm concerned with are the LSD and brakes. Are there aftermarket parts I can just slap on there to make it run like a GTU? Is the gearing different? Any other advice you have for doing this would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Will

GXL has the LSD and big brakes but it's also got all the little electrical goodies like power windows and such that add weight. If you plan to strip the interior, you'll toss all that stuff anyway so the only thing you have to consider is the sunroof.

Hey,

Thanks for enlightening me, I did not know that. So what sets the drivetrain of the GTU and Turbo 2 apart from the GXL? Thanks again.

It would be simpler to find a good base model and add the LSD and 4 piston brakes than it would to retrofit a GXL to get rid of all of the goodies.

Definitely try to avoid a sunroof, that's a good 10-15lbs way up high, don't stress if you can't find an aluminum hood equipped model (unless you don't want to paint it, then definitely look for one). Look for a non ABS, non sunroof, non AC, non PS equipped car for the ultimate in light weight (ABS would be nice but I've never seen a car with it that doesn't leak)

Depending on the year, the GXL had or didn't have LSD. The GXL has 4:10 rear gears as opposed to 4:30 for the GTU(s), as well as a taller 5th gear. Both always had the good brakes, but the GXL has a lot of added luxury stuff that you don't want in a race car.
