GXL stock alarm system?

Hey guys, i was wondering how the stock alarm system works. I have one on my 87 gxl but i never seem to get it to go off. Also where is the brain of this alarm at, and how could i upgrade to a aftermarket one. thanks

Arm the system by locking the doors. Leave a window down. Unlock the door from the inside. Enjoy the symphony..

open door, lock door from the inside, close door with the exterior handle held up until the door is closed...

wait 1 minute open door without using the key (through open window, slim jim, etc) and the system will go off.

Disarm only by using the key in the door to the unlock position
