GTUs for me

Seems like a good post to turn into an actual poll.

I'm not bashing the TII. I'm a fan of all RX-7s, but there's nothing like a screaming 8k RPM 13B hitting highway speeds in second gear.

I like what you wrote in the other GTUs v. TII thread:

I have personally driven 2 GTUs's (one is still for sale) and I can tell you they are EFFORTLESS to drive hard. IF it gives you any idea, I build rex's everyday, and I traded my lightly modded t2 for the GTUs. THey sound sweeter in the high revs even though theyre not quite as powerful. Theyre more reliable and you can get 25mpg out of one vs. 18 for a turbo II.

A gtus is by no means as fast in most conditions as a t2. However, the t2 doesnt drive as well as the GTUs. This from some one who has driven 2 GTUs's in good condition recently, and several t2's before and after. IF you put an 87-88 t2, and an 89-90 GTUs beside each other, equal miles, equal price, appearance, interior, etc., Ill choose the GTUs all day long.

A) because turbo II's are everywhere. b) because turbo II's are a bit heavier feeling and not as responsive/swift as the S. ON open road the t2 will spank the S, but on a backroad theyll be neck in neck depending on drivers. You've just gotta drive one and feel it to know what Im talking about, its quite a bit different than any other model of rx-7 including a regular old s5 NA. IT is so effortless to drive, so forgiving, so neutral, and gives so much feedback.

I totally hear you about having to drive one...the specs on paper do not do the car justice. It all just seems to come together when driven.

Anyways, welcome to the GTUs club! You will be receiving your "No Turbo" stickers and "NA all the Way!" shirt soon. *grin*

heavier? oh well... jsut put a bigger turbo on... doesn't handle so well? fine lets get some Tien HAs or JIC FLA2, and new bushings, new ball joints, and aftermarket sway bars...

if you compared two fuly restored GTUs and TII (89+) ofcourse...

with the same suspension, same tires, same everything for suspension related stuff... the TII will handle jsut as good

Damn Kevin, when did you get a GTUs?
About 3 months ago. This car has been in and out of here a lot in the last 2 years: a local guy had it, blew it up, and traded it to me on partial trade for a t2 I had. Then, I fell on hard times, and had to sell everthing I had to a guy in VA. Later, he sent it back down to be rebuilt and the engine bay cleaned. HE took it home and broke it in, then his eye turned towards my t2, adn we traded my car with mods and 18's for the S and $2k.

I plan to paint it, put a single straight exhaust, intake, e-fan, advanced timing, and decent tires on it. Then Ill either just keep it t complement my turbo 'vert, or maybe sell it (for the right price).

Shiiit...I guess I'll have to start being nice to you. *grin*
Wow, did hell just freeze over? No, just the captain of the titanic bought a GTUs

I have always been pro-NA. I like a turbo car, dont get me wrong, but it is never the same (or to me, as good) as a good running open exhaust VDI motor..that **** sings at about 6krpm on up...

Yo,

Here's why you want a GTUs:

And...

The highest performance RX-7's have never had sunroofs. R1, R2 FD's, Infini III, IV...GTUs.

Ahhh...more headroom with a helmet on. *grin*

Hey Kevin L, what color is your GTUs? Any pics? I promise I won't say anything about any surface rust. *grin*

You said you were going to paint it...you going to stay stock or go wild?

Nose and fender were replaced due to minor defects. Ill be painting it myself, stock blaze red. The WHeel centercaps have been painted stock silver again (wheelpaint) and the dumbass mudflaps will stay off after the paint. THe inside is almost perfect when cleaned...

Last, the engine bay. Stock rebuild, painted irons, all stock otherwise (for now). THe car is mechanically perfect, so the paint is the worst thing about it. WHile it was apart for the rebuild I took each and every piece and connector off the engine bay, cleaned it by hand, and replaced each one.

Greased lightning. Spray on, let sit 10 minutes, spray again, spray washrag, wipe repeatedly with more GL, rinse.

Hmm...

To tell you the truth the faster S5 T2 is very tempting but I am curious. What is the HP/TQ of both the GTUs and the T2 (s5s)? I don't really have any extra money to be spending on a new engine or anything, pretty much whatever I sell my car for is what I'm left with for the new RX7 + mods. I like the idea of a better handling GTUs and the better MPG and reliability, but a faster turbo 2 sounds good as well (I've never had a turbo before). So is it possible to make the GTUs as fast as a T2, what about later down the line when they both have on some decent mods, can a heavily modded GTUs keep up/beat a heavily modded T2 or is the max potential of the T2 greater? It's really late so if I'm babbling please excuse me. I'm just trying to comprehend some stuff.

Not auto parts. Walmart, grocery stores, lowe's/home depot etc. IT is a common household cleaner.

Yo,

Redninja - Any NA FC will never beat a modded TII in a straightline. That's the TII's turf. Now if you want to go up in the hills, or on a track...you'll be better off.

Absolutely, but as soon as the T2 starts slapping on mods the NA doesn't have a chance in a straight line contest. The hp on a typical reliable street-modified NA is about 200+ bhp, while the TII is good for about 400+ bhp in a reliable street configuration with an aftermarket turbo. Basically, just about anything that can be done to an NA can also be done to a TII, but the TII still has the turbo. No contest.

First of all, the turbo will not help handling any. Secondly, much like the response above, anything that you can do the the TII suspension you can also do to the NA suspension, but the NA still weighs less. Once again, no contest.

As far as fully restored cars go, the TII could out-handle the base model NA cars with the thinner tires and softer suspension, but it would also depend on the track and driver.

Yo,

Striped? Hmmm...I don't think my car has stripes. Oh! Did you mean /stripped/? Got it.

Yeah, they did that. It was called the Infini IV.

Since you can't get it here...might as well get the closest thing...the GTUs.

Having owned several RX-7's over the years. (5 or 6? Can't remember) I'll have to say that if there were no TurboII, there would be no contest between FC and FD, obviously, I'll pick and FD.

I sold my FD, and got a TurboII, not for money reasons, just because I love them more. Yes, I've owned NAs, and driven a GTUs for three months.

I forgot what point I was trying to make. hahah, nevermind.

Is there a GTU type? I see one in the FC FS/FT section...is that different from the GTU-S?

Yo,

Yep, there was the GTU model in 1988 through 1990. The GTUs was only made in 1989 and just 100 made in 1990.

It's the little "s" that makes a big difference!

Um, great idea, except that a lot of the TII's extra weight is caused by the heavier transmission, driveshaft, differential, and halfshafts. I guess dropping just the TII engine and hood into a light NA model would probably be the best compromise, but you wouldn't be able to up the hp much above stock TII levels without having drivetrain issues.

Yes, but it would be a real pain if you tried to convert the 86-88 models.

Sorry my GTUs brothers but I would almost say a S5 TII but I have never driven one.My GTUs handles great but I want more power.I figure that someday I'll do a partial TII conversion( engine, gearbox, custom driveshaft) and have the best of both worlds. So it's all what your after.
