gtu lsd available at jnkyrd la,ca

i went to the junk yard today in wilmenton by carson
pick-u-part by pacific coast hwy and blinn the left one

i say a 89 gtu completly dismanteled but it had the lsd
it said gtu on the fender and had 5 log spinners on one caliper brakes so its probally a gtu i spind a tire and the other on moved
and it looks bigger than a n/a base model

they go for $70-100 at the jnk yard

on the side it said "M550 2"
a 87 gxl said "M550 1"
my 90 gtu lsd says "M550 1" i think the guy that sold it to me mislead me or was informed because he said it was a 90 GTU-S

does anyone know the difference between lsd on gtu gxl
the 4.33 to 4.11 gear ratial is one but visual difference

i think mine is 8" diamiter and i heard gxl are still 7" dia.

Hey I've never gotten a chance to go down to those junkyards yet. I usually go to the one in Sun Valley.

Did you happen to notice any 88+ CRX's in the junkyard there? I need to get some stuff for my beater.

The 89-90 GTU was the base model, so it does not have an LSD! You would want to find an 89-90 GTUs, an 88 GTU (when it was not the base model; the SE was), or an 86-88 GXL. 86-88 LSDs are clutch-type, while 89+ LSDs are viscous.

Oh, yeah. The 4.3 final drive was only available on the 89-90 GTUs. Most everything else was 4.1, except automatics and early 'verts, which were 3.909s.

It helps if you take it off the car yourself. If not, then you will probably have to crack the case and (1) check for an LSD and (2) count the teeth on the Ring and Pinion gear set. The only GXLs with an LSD (86-88) had a clutch-type posi unit, so that should be pretty apparent. And any clutch-type LSD would automatically have a 4.1 final drive ratio. The GTUs had a viscous LSD, but all you need to do is count the teeth on the gear set and figure out the ratio. If it's 4.3:1, then it's a GTUs.

If both wheels were off the ground there's an easy way to tell if it's a 4.30.

With a piece of tape, or shoe polish, or whatever you got, put a mark on the flange that connects to the driveshaft. Next move the mark to the 12 o'clock position. Then spin one of the wheels one full time around. If the unit is a 4.10, then the flange would have spun 4.1 times around leaving your mark a little past the 1 o'clock position. If it's a 4.30, your mark should be closer to the 3 o'clock position and it's time to buy that puppy .
