Grinding Noise on start

I've looked around Rx-7 Club and no one has addressed this issue, scaring me quite a bit. My new 88 'vert is a little rascal, Roxane intermittently will give me a *grr grr grrr* On start...plain and simple, i have no idea what it is, and im curious if any of you guys could help me out. Thanks so much. Starter perhaps? Don't know, plz help.

sounds like starter or flywheel. I had an '89 323 that would grind badly on start up occassionally. I pulled the transmission and the flywheel was missing two or three teeth.

huh, how long has it been doing this? I'm curious cause my SA has been doing this for about 3 months, but about 4 days ago, the grinding sound continues after the motor is warmed up and upon excelleration or cruise speed about every 3 to 10 seconds. So now after reading this thread, it could very well be the fly wheel. I'll get both checked out today...
