Grinding...... 2nd gear ONLY - the convertible.

Hi guys....

The only time 2nd gear grinds is when it's around 6500+RPMs. Is my 2nd gear synchrno going out? If I shift above 6500 RPM, it won't grind at all.....

Or, when I come around a corner, and downshift, it sometimes grinds, but not all the time. Most of the time, it'll do it from 1-2, and coming up on higher rpms.

The car has never really seen higher than 5000 before I owned her (My brother kept her garage-kept, driven occasionally). I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Would you recommand a tranny oil change / diff. change?

Worn syncro probably.

Change the gear oil in the tranny with Redline MT-90.

If that doesn't help then use Redline Super Lightweight Shock Proof.

And go take the car out and drive it up to 7K-8K RPMs. Really drive the car!

Babying a Rotary and not running the engine above 5000 RPMs is one of the worse things you can do to it.

try some, Redline synthetic fluid? i've always read that usually helped out the synchro problem(which sounds like what yours is), atleast for a little while...But im not positive

edit: dang mark, beat me to it

I'm not playing any games. What's the big deal about taking pictures on what you do? I can point out a hell of alot other threads that do that, and don't get smart comments......

Ice and AE thanks for your help.

Yeah change to Redline MT90, my 2nd gear would grind anytime i shifted into second above 1500rpms.. i changed to redline and i could shift into second at redline with no grind whatsoever.

Naaah. No problem. A long day I guess.

Well, the hood is off now, and everything ALMOST done... and ready to pull the motor. I've just been lazy lately. I'll go into the garage.. look at, get ready to work on her.... and say "naaah.... i'll wait"

cloead - Yeah. I remember changing the tranny fluid in the GXL, 2nd and 5th gear would grind heavily while others at random times... when I changed it, every gear would be "fine" besides 5th......

Anyway, thanks a bunch.
